Emory Men's Tennis Falls To Chicago In Finals Of UAA Championships

The No. 2-ranked Emory men's tennis team fell short in its quest to bring home a fourth straight title on Saturday, falling to Chicago in the finals of the University Athletic Association Championships. The No. 7-ranked Marrons raised their record to 16-4 following a 7-2 verdict over the Eagles who slipped to 16-4. The Championships were held in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

Emory went into the match short-handed as it was without the services of No. 1 singles player Jonathan Jemison, who fell ill during the latter stages of his match on Friday.

In doubles play, senior Andrew Harrington moved into Jemison's spot at No. 3, joining forces with freshman Hayden Cassone to come away with the initial point of the match, an 8-2 decision over Bobby Bethke and Nicolas Chua.  After UC knotted the contest with a win at second doubles, it went ahead by a 2-1 count when its top tandem of Erik Kerrigan and Ninan Kumar edged the Eagles' duo of Scott Rubinstein and James Spaulding in an intense encounter, 9-7.

The Maroons sealed the match after posting wins in the first three singles decisions, all of which came in the latter part of the lineup. Charlie Pei defeated Rubinstein at No. 5, while Peter Leung put UC one point away with a victory over James Spaulding at No. 6. The winning point came off the racket of Jeremy Yuan at four with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 verdict over Harrington.  Cassone picked up Emory's lone point in singles, rallying for a 0-6, 7-5, 7-6 victory at No. 1 over 12th-ranked Erik Kerrigan.  It marked Cassone's 23rd singles win of the season in 28 outings.

The Eagles will break for final exams before finding out what awaits them in the postseason when the bids and pairings are announced for the NCAA D-III Tournament on May 7.
