Emory Men's Tennis Opens Spring Season With Win Over Point University

The Emory men's tennis team opened the spring portion of its schedule on Friday afternoon with a victory over Point University.  The Eagles of Head Coach John Browning posted an 8-1 triumph over the Skyhawks who dipped to 2-2. The match was played at the Woodruff PE Center Indoor Courts on the Emory campus.

Junior Hayden Cassone, sophomores Antonio Mora and Andrew Esses and senior Hassan Kenawi all emerged with two wins on the day.  Cassone teamed with Mora for an 8-2 decision at No. 1 doubles over PU's Joe Klokow and Patrick Tobacco before registering a 6-4, 6-4 outcome over Klokow at No. 1 singles. Mora picked up his second successful result of the afternoon by bettering Ferderico Barbon, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Esses and Kenawi enjoyed a productive outing at second doubles, notching an 8-3 win over Barbon and Pereira, before moving onto singles where Esses topped Pereira, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 and Kenawi capturing a 6-2, 6-2, triumph at six over Trey Maust, 6-2, 6-2.  Rounding out the singles winners for Emory was freshman Mark Sverdlov at No. 4 with a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Tobacco.

Next up for the Eagles is a trip to Saint Peter, Minnesota, where they will compete in the

ITA Division III National Men's Team Indoor Championship Presented by Oracle, Feb. 21-23.  The Eagles' quarterfinal-round opponent will be host Gustavus Adolphus, with that match taking place on Friday at 8:00 pm (EST).
