Marc Goedemans Wins B Draw Final on Final Day of Grizzly Open at GGC

The Emory University men's tennis team wrapped up a weekend of competition in Lawrenceville, GA on Sunday, competing in the Grizzly Open at Georgia Gwinnett College.

Freshman Marc Goedemans headlined 14 Emory players at the three-day tournament as the newcomer captured the singles B draw title as he went 4-0 as the bracket's No. 1 seed. Goedemens advanced to the finals with wins over SCAD Atlanta (6-1, 6-2), teammate Ryan Glanville (4-6, 6-3, 10-7), North Carolina Wesleyan (6-4, 4-6, 10-7) before topping SCAD Savannah's Lopez Cruz in straight sets 7-6 (4), 7-5 in the finals.

All nine Eagles in the B draw were triumphant in the opening round matches and saw six players advance to the third round. Graduate student Santiago Suarez reached the semifinals along with Goedemens but fell to eventual runner-up Cruz 6-4, 4-6, 12-10.

In the main singles competition, the Eagles went 4-1 in the first round with wins by senior Andrew Esses (7-5, 7-6 (4)), senior Antonio Mora (6-4, 6-3), sophomore Nolan Shah (4-6, 7-5, 10-5) and sophomore Brandon Cohen (won by withdraw) before all four players bowed out in the second round.

In doubles, the Emory team of seniors Esses and Sahil Raina highlighted seven Emory duos in the 25-team field as they advanced to the semifinals. Esses/Raina topped teammate Sujay Sharma/Suarez in the second round, 6-3, and a GGC tandem, 6-2, before falling to eventual champions Robinson/Falke from NC Wesleyan, 7-6 (1) in the semis.

Next up for the Eagles is the ITA Cup next weekend, Oct. 14-17, and will send regional doubles champs Esses/Raina to Rome, GA.
