All-Emory Doubles Final Set at ITA Regionals; Three Eagles Reach Singles Semifinals

The Emory University men's tennis team continued its strong play at the ITA Regionals on Saturday with three Eagles advancing to the semifinals in singles and an all-Emory finals set in the doubles competition.

In singles, three of the four final spots will be occupied by members of the Blue and Gold with junior Nolan Shah, graduate student Charlie James and sophomore Emilio Van Cotthem set to take part in Sunday's semifinals following their performances on Saturday.

The No. 2 overall seed in Shah picked up two more straight set victories with wins of 6-0, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-2 and will take on Van Cotthem in the semis. Van Cotthem earned a walkover win in the round of 16 before he was leading 6-1, 3-0 in the quarterfinals until he his opponent needed to pull out due to injury.

On the other side of the draw, James needed a three-setter to defeat Peyton Erck of Sewanee 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the first match of the morning before he topped North Carolina Wesleyan's Thespo Mosarwa 6-4, 6-2 in the quarters. Fellow newcomer Dean Kamenev reached the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-1 decision but fell to the No. 1 seed Jordan Theron from Sewanee in the quarterfinals in three sets, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 4-6.

In the doubles draw, it will be an all-Emory championship match with the No. 1 and No. 2 overall seeds advancing to the finals.

Top-seeded duo James and junior Ryan Glanville notched an 8-2 decision over Sewanee's Erck/Motlow prior to besting NCW's Falke/Segovia 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinals. For the No. 2 seeded tandem of Shah and freshman John Lasanajak, they topped teammates Kamenev and junior Brandon Cohen 8-7 (2) before taking down Sewanee's Theron/Wickland in three sets 6-4, 6-7 (5), 10-7.

Sunday's slate features the singles semifinals getting underway at 8:30 AM in Rocky Mount, North Carolina with the championship match to follow. The doubles championship match will be the final match of the week and will take place following the conclusion of the singles title match.
