Emory Tennis Opens Play at ITA Cup; Shulman & Shah Reach Singles Quarterfinals

Five Emory University tennis players were in action on Thursday, competing at the ITA Cup at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Georgia. Representing the Eagles were senior Stephanie Shulman from women's tennis and juniors Nolan Shah, Ryan Glanville, graduate student Charlie James and freshman John Lasanajak from the men's team.

Shulman and Shah, both ITA South Regional champions, took part in the singles competition and advanced to their respective draw's quarterfinals.

Shulman opposed Grinnell's Sabrina Tang in the first round and was a straight-set winner with the 6-3, 7-5 decision. Shulman then went up against the draw's No. 1 seed in UChicago's Sylwia Mikos and was able to grab a set but ultimately fell in three, 3-6, 6-2, 3-6.

For Shah, he went to three sets in both of his matches, beginning the day with a win over New Jersey City's Nicolas Teynie 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the first round. In the quarters, Shah also drew the No. 1 seed in RPI's Aiden Drover-Mattinen and fell by a score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-7 (4).

The day concluded for the Eagles with both men's doubles teams dropping matches in the Round of 16. Glanville and James, the ITA South Regional runners-up, were matched up with the draw's No. 1 seed out of WashU, Ramireddy/Huynh, and forced a third set super tiebreak in a highly competitive match but fell to the Bears' tandem 6-7 (9), 7-6 (5), 2-10.

In the bottom half of the draw, Shah and Lasanajak, the ITA South Regional champions, faced Southwestern's Ellis/Roy pairing and were able to win the first set 6-2 before dropping the final two sets by 2-6, 4-10 margins.

All five Eagles will be in action on Friday in consolation draws with Shulman beginning play with NYU's Dakota Fordham and Shah going up against Sewanee's Jordan Theron in a rematch of the regional finals. In doubles, James/Glanville will oppose Hobart's Wright/Pesin while Shah/Lasanajak will take on Washington & Lee's Brady/Erb.
