Men's Tennis Takes Down Tennessee Wesleyan, 5-4, in Home Opener

The Emory University men's tennis team continued its strong start to the spring, knocking off NAIA powerhouse Tennessee Wesleyan University, 5-4, Tuesday afternoon on the indoor courts at the WoodPEC.

In the final tune up before this weekend's ITA National Indoors Championship, the Eagles collected two of the three doubles points and split the six singles matches in the tight match against the Bulldogs to remain unbeaten so far this spring at 3-0 while TWU drops to 5-2.

Emory's first point of the afternoon came in convincing fashion as senior Andrew Esses and junior Nolan Shah stayed perfect at the No. 1 position, defeating their TWU opponents by an 8-2 margin. After Tennessee Wesleyan evened the match with a win on court three, graduate student and reigning UAA Athlete of the Week Charlie James and teammate Ryan Glanville sent Emory to singles with the edge, winning 8-7 (1) at the No. 2 spot.

The singles portion of the match saw the Eagles claim three of the top four matches with wins coming at the No. 2, 3, and 4 spots. Shah was a winner at second singles in three sets 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 while freshman Dean Kamenev (6-4, 6-3) and James (7-6 (5), 6-2) won via straight sets on courts three and four.

The Eagles are scheduled to travel to St. Paul, Minnesota this weekend to compete in the 2023 edition of ITA Indoors, hosted by Gustavus Adolphus. Emory, the No. 7 seed in the draw, is set to oppose UAA rival and the No. 2 seed Case Western Reserve on Friday in the first round.
