The Emory University men's tennis team opened its California spring break trip on Thursday, splitting a pair of matches against RPI and Division II's Azusa Pacific.

The morning saw a 6-1 win in favor of the Eagles over the Engineers as the Stag-Hen Invitational moved up a day due to incoming inclement weather.

Emory carried a 1-0 lead into singles by virtue of claiming wins on courts one and three in doubles action. Graduate student Charlie James and junior Ryan Glanville posted a 7-5 decision on the top court while junior Nolan Shah and senior Samuel Dean came through with a 6-2 decision at the third spot.

In singles, the Eagles captured victories on five of six courts including wins at the top four positions. Senior Andrew Esses pulled out a three-setter 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 as did freshman Dean Kamenev on court three 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. On the other courts, the Eagles earned straight set wins with Shah going 6-4, 6-3 on the second position, James winning 6-3, 6-0 at the four line and sophomore Emilio Van Cotthem rounding out the Eagle winners with a 6-4, 7-6 result at sixth singles.

Later in the afternoon, Emory resumed play with its originally scheduled match against the Cougars of APU with Asuza Pacific earning the 4-1 decision.

The Cougars earned the doubles point with wins at the top two doubles matches despite the Eagles' pairing of Shah and Dean being in command on court three, 5-2, before going unfinished.

Moving to singles, APU continued its momentum earning straight set wins on the top three courts before James won his seventh straight singles match with his 6-2, 6-2 result at the fourth position for Emory's lone point in the match.

The Eagles hope to resume the Stag-Hen Invitational in Claremont, California this weekend, weather permitting.
