Eagles Dominate Singles and Doubles Portion of ITA Fall Regional on Day 1

The Emory men's tennis team started their season at the ITA Southern Regionals in Sewanee, Tennessee on Friday morning. With Fall All-America honors up for grabs, the individual tournament included 10 Eagles in the main draw. After two strong rounds of play, the Eagles are in prime position to bring home some hardware.

The Eagles swept the first round of the main draw, going 9-0 and No. 4 seed sophomore Dean Kamenev advanced by default. The Eagles dropped just one set over the nine matches. Freshman Robinson Luo showed grit early in the day, dropping his first set 6-4 to Asbury's Alejandro Caseres before storming all the way back, winning the second set 6-1 and battling to an 11-9 win in the tiebreak.

No. 2 seeded senior Nolan Shah was locked in during his first round, not dropping a single game in the match and sweeping his opponent 6-0 in both sets. Shah went on to win his next match 2-0 as well. Shah is looking to defend his title, having won the ITA Regional singles and doubles championship last season.

Freshman Ryan Nash, the No. 8 seed in the tournament, dropped just one point in his two-set sweep as well. Nash, a four-time high school state champion in Florida, followed up his dominant first match with another impressive win, and sweeping both sets 6-3 in the second round.

Five more Eagles joined Shah and Nash in advancing to the third round of the main draw, including senior Ryan Glanville, sophomore Eshaan Dani, freshman Christian Liew, Kamenev, and Luo.

Sophomores Luca Lipari and Alex Marino both won their singles match in the Purple Draw as well.

In the main doubles draw, the Eagles were once again dominant. Shah and Kamenev swept their opponents 8-0 while Glanville and Cohen won 8-3. The tandems of Nash and Dani and Dean and Liew were also successful, winning their matches 8-2.

In the Purple doubles draw, Lapari and Marino won 8-1 to advance.

The singles portion of the ITA Regional will resume at 8:00 AM tomorrow.
