Men’s Tennis Dominates Berry on the Road, Complete 9-0 Sweep

The No. 1 ranked Emory men's tennis team (9-2) played its final match of the weekend on Sunday morning, taking on in-state rival Berry. The Eagles got back into the win column on Sunday, pulling off a dominant 9-0 sweep over the Vikings.

Emory gave some of their usual starters the day off after a string of long matches in Texas earlier this weekend, allowing the Eagles to get a look at some new faces on Sunday. Freshman Christian Liew jumped up to the No. 1 doubles spot alongside sophomore Alex Marino. The two underclassmen left no doubt in their match, winning 8-2.

Sophomore Spencer Richards and freshman Robinson Luo appeared on court two, also winning their match by a score of 8-2.

Junior Emilio Van Cotthem appeared on the doubles court for the first time this year, taking court three alongside sophomore John Lasanajak. The tandem won their match, 8-3, finishing off the doubles sweep.

Emory entered the singles portion of the day with a commanding 3-0 lead.

Liew played his first collegiate match in the No. 1 singles position on Sunday. It took some time for the freshman to adjust, dropping his first set 5-7, but bounced back to win the next two sets, 6-2 and 6-0, to win the match. Van Cotthem also made a jump up in the lineup, playing on court two for the first time this year. The promotion proved to be no problem for the junior, winning in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-1.

Freshman Ryan Nash was in the starting lineup, playing in the No. 3 singles position. The rookie won his first set 6-0 before dropping the second 4-6. Yet, he managed to pull away from his opponent and win the final set 6-4. Luo added a win for Emory on court four, winning in three sets (7-5, 2-6, 6-2).

Lasanajak made his second appearance for Emory this season, playing on court five. The sophomore remained undefeated, taking down his opponent in straight sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-3. Marino made his first singles appearance of the year on Sunday, playing out of the No. 6 position. The sophomore won his first set in a tie breaker, 7-6 (7-2), before handling the second set, 6-4, to take the win and complete the sweep.

With the win, Emory improves to 9-2 in dual matches this spring and conclude the weekend road trip at 2-1. The Eagles will now return home for three-straight home matches, starting with Oglethorpe this Friday. The match against the Stormy Petrels is scheduled to get started at 4:15 PM on Friday.
