The 2008 Outdoor Track and Field season was a banner campaign
for the Emory University, as the Eagles' recorded their best
National finish in the program's history.
Paced at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field
Championships by senior sprinter Frederick Linton,
the Eagles scored 23 points at the meet to tie for seventh place,
bettering their 10th-place finish during the 2004 season.
Linton came away from the meet with two individual all-America
honors, finishing second in the 400-meter dash, and fourth in the
200-meter dash. Sophomore Alex Greenhouse
set a school record with his performance in the 400-meter hurdles,
finishing sixth with a time of 52.15 seconds. Emory's other
individual all-American, senior Jake Wheeler, made
the most of his first trip to the NCAA Championships, finishing
sixth in the javelin throw.
Emory also received an all-America performance from its 4x400-meter
relay team, running a school record time of 3:14.22 to finish fifth
in the event. Greenhouse, freshman Jason
Campbell, sophomore Tyler Faits, and
Linton each earned an all-America honor for their participation in
the event.
Linton secured his third-consecutive University Athletic
Association (UAA) Most Valuable Performer honor, as the Eagles
finished third at the 2008 UAA Outdoor Track and Field
Championships. Linton came away with conference championships
in the 200- and 400-meter dashes, while Greenhouse won the
100-meter dash, and Wheeler was the top-finisher in the javelin
throw. The Eagles also picked up relay victories from their
4x100- and 4x400-meter relay teams. All together, the Eagles
won six events and earned 20 all-UAA honors.
Emory picked up first-place team finishes in its two home meets of
the season, finishing first of 21 teams at the Emory Invitational,
and first of 17 teams at the Emory Asics Classic. The Eagles
also finished second out of seven teams at the Mountain Laurel
Invitational in Sewanee, Tenn.
Other Emory records set during the year included sophomore
Tommy Fyffe's mark of 9:19.20 in the 3,000-meter
steeplechase, Linton's time of 21.10 in the 200-meter dash, and
Wheeler's javelin throw of 61.08 meters. Linton's mark of
47.03 seconds in the 400-meter dash was the second-best time in
school history, just three-hundredths of a second shy of the school
record.
