EMORY MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD FINISHES SEVENTH AT THE
DIVISION III CHAMPIONSHIPS
(May 24) The Emory University Men's Track and Field team
recorded its best National finish in the program's history, as the
Eagles claimed seventh-place at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track
and Field Championships.
Despite entering the final day of completion scoreless, Emory
recorded 23 points on Saturday, finishing 12 points behind the
winning team - McMurray University (Texas) - and tying with the
University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh and the University of St. John's
(Minn.) for seventh place.
Senior Frederick Linton came away from the final
day of competition with three all-America honors. He began
his day with a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a
personal-best time of 47.03 seconds, marking his second-straight
outdoor all-America finish in the event. Linton also earned
an individual all-America honor in the 200-meter dash, finishing
fourth in a time of 21.49 seconds.
Linton, along with Alex Greenhouse, Tyler
Faits, and Jason Campbell, finished fifth
in the 4x400-meter relay to earn all-America honors. The
squad recorded a mark of 3:14.22, setting a new school record in
the event.
Greenhouse also scored in the 400-meter hurdles, as the sophomore
finished sixth in the event to earn his second all-America honor of
the meet. His time of 52.15 seconds is a new school
record.
Senior Jake Wheeler earned his first-career
all-America honor, finishing sixth in the javelin throw with a
distance of 61.08 meters. The mark breaks Wheeler's old
school record of 61.01 meters, set earlier this season.
Emory seventh-place finish surpasses the Eagles' 10th-place finish
in 2004 as the best National showing in school history. Emory
was also the top University Athletic Association (UAA) team at the
meet.
The National Championships conclude the 2008 Outdoor Track and
Field Season for the Eagles.
EMORY'S LINTON PACES THE FIELD IN DAY TWO OF THE NCAA
OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
(May 23) Emory University's Frederick Linton set
the pace in the preliminary round of the 400-meter dash, as the
senior recorded the top time in the event during day two of the
NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Linton's mark of 47.06 seconds led the field of 16 runners in the
event, and was just six-hundredths of a second shy of the school
record in the event. The time is a personal-best in the event
for Linton.
With the top-finish, Linton will advance to the finals of the
400-meter dash on Saturday at 2:20 PM. The event will be just
one in a busy day for the Eagles' all-American sprinter, who will
also be competing in the 200-meter dash finals at 3:45 PM, and
along with Jason Campbell, Tyler
Faits, Alex Greenhouse as part of Emory's

respective events.
Frederick Linton ran the fifth-fastest time in the
200-meter dash field, qualifying for the finals on Saturday with a
time of 21.39 seconds. The mark was the senior's
second-fastest time of the season, and puts him in line for an
all-America honor in the event, should he finish in the top-eight
of the nine athletes who qualified for the finals.
Emory's other individual competitor, Alex
Greenhouse, qualified for the finals of the 400-meter
hurdles, running a time of 53.39 seconds. The time was the

try for his first-career individual all-America honor on Saturday
at 3:25 PM.
The Eagles' 4x400-meter relay team of Greenhouse, Tyler
Faits, Jason Campbell, and Linton
recorded the fourth-fastest time of the preliminary round with a

The team will be back in action for the finals on Saturday at 4:55
PM.
Emory's 4x100-meter relay team was unable to qualify for Saturday's
finals in the event. The combination of Jim

is seeded 16th in the long jump.
Linton is Emory's lone returning outdoor all-American (in the 2007
400-meter dash), but the Eagles 4x400-meter relay team earned
all-America honors during this year's NCAA Indoor Track and Field
Championships.
EMORY ATHLETES RECORD SIX PROVISIONAL QUALIFYING TIMES
DURING THREE WEEKEND MEETS
(May 11) The Emory University Track and Field team took full
advantage of three meets this weekend, recording six provisional
qualifying times over a three-day period.
Five Emory distance runners took part in the Dr. Keehler
Invitational, hosted by North Central College (Ill.) on Thursday
and Friday. Junior Rebecca Willett ran the
fifth-fastest time in school history in the 800-meter run,
finishing third and recording a provisional qualifying mark of
2:14.47. The Eagles also looked strong in the 5,000-meter
run, paced by a fifth-place finish for junior Natalie
Waryck in a personal-record time of 17:47.03. She
was followed closely by sixth-place finisher Melissa
Jones (17:48.32) and eighth-place Lauren
Shores (17:58.20). On the men's side, sophomore
Tommy Fyffe recorded a personal-best time of
9:27.33 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing 17th
overall.
At the Georgia Invitational on Friday, Emory's lone female
competitor, Jordan Beall, fell just a .11 meters
shy of her own school record in the long jump, recording a
provisional qualifying distance of 5.59 meters. In addition,
two of the Emory men's relays recorded provisional qualifying
times. The Eagles' 4x100-meter relay team of Jim
LePorte, Tyler Faits, Frederick
Linton, and Naoki Murai finished eighth
in a time of 41.48 seconds, while the 4x400-meter relay team of
Linton, Greenhouse, Jason Campbell, and
Naoki Murai finished fifth with a
mark of 3:16.73.
Other Emory performances from the Georgia Invitational included
Steve Dry's time of 15.04 seconds in the 110-meter
hurdles, just .09 seconds shy of a provisional qualifying
mark. Fritz Hain finished 12th in the
400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.25 seconds, while Faits claimed
16th in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 22.08 seconds.
The Eagles competed at the Orange and Purple Classic at Clemson
University (S.C.) on Saturday. Emory's 4x100-meter relay
team, consisting of LePorte, Faits, Greenhouse and Linton, bettered
its provisional time from just a day before, recording a mark of
41.44 seconds. Linton also went on to run a provisional mark
of 21.72 seconds in the 200-meter dash, finishing eighth, matching
his second-fastest time of the season in the event. Sophomore

Eagles' fastest 800-meter run time of the season, 1:55.62, while
senior Jake Wheeler finished fourth in the javelin
throw with a distance of 56.22 meters. For the women,
sophomore Rebecca Flink ran a career-best time of
4:59.68 in the 1,500-meter run, finishing third overall.
The three meets provided the Eagles with a chance to tune up for
the Division III National Championships, which are now less than
two weeks away. Emory will take part in three additional
meets next weekend, before its qualifiers depart for the year-end
meet on May 22nd-24th.
EMORY TRACK AND FIELD TO TAKE PART IN THREE WEEKEND
MEETS
(May 9) Emory University will return to the track with a
busy weekend, as the Eagles will take part in three separate meets
between Thursday and Saturday. Emory will be at the Dr.
Keeler Track and Field Invitational on Thursday and Friday, the
Georgia Invitational on Friday, and the Orange and Purple Classic
on Saturday.
This weekend's action will be the first time the Eagles will take
to the track since both the men and women finished third at the
University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships.
Currently, the Emory men are ranked 23rd in the Nation, while the
women are ranked 42nd.
The Eagles will be sending a number of their distance runners to
the Dr. Keeler Invitational, hosted by North Central College in
Naperville, Ill. Meanwhile, Emory's relays and jumpers will
head to the Georgia Invitational, hosted by the University of
Georgia, in Athens, and the Orange and Purple Classic, hosted by
Clemson University (S.C.).
The meets will serve as a chance for a number of Emory runners to
qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships later this month,
while already qualified runners will begin to prepare for the
meet. The Division III Championships will be held on May
22nd-24th, in Oshkosh, WI.
LINTON EARNS THIRD UAA MOST OUTSTANDING PERFORMER
HONOR
(Apr. 24) Emory University's Frederick
Linton earned the third University Athletic Association
(UAA) honor of his career, as the senior was named the Most
Outstanding Performer for running events at the 2008 UAA Outdoor
Track and Field Championships.
Linton set UAA records in three separate events and recorded four
first-place finishes at the meet. The senior set a school and
UAA record in the 200-meter dash, recording a first-place finish
with a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 21.10 seconds in the
event, the fastest time by a Division III runner this season.
He would go on to record a mark of 48.17 seconds in the 400-meter
dash, both a UAA record and a provisional qualifying time.
Linton would later run the anchor leg on the 4x400-meter relay team
with Jim LePorte, Naoki Murai,
and Jason Campbell, helping the team to a
first-place finish in the event with a UAA record and provisional
time of 3:16.32. Linton's final first-place finish came as
part of the 4x100-meter relay team with LePorte, Tyler
Faits, and Alex Greenhouse, as the team
recorded a provisional qualifying time of 41.68.
It marks the second-consecutive UAA Outdoor Championship meet, and
the third-consecutive UAA Championship meet (including the 2008
Indoor Track Championships), that Linton has earned the
honor. Linton joins former Eagles Chris
Williams (1992-94) and Troy Thompson
(1996-97) as Emory runners to win multiple UAA Outdoor Performer of
the Year awards.
Linton's performance helped the Eagles to a third-place finish at
the meet.
EMORY MEN & WOMEN FINISH THIRD AT THE UAA OUTDOOR
TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
(Apr. 21) Emory University athletes set three University Athletic
Association (UAA) records, a track record, a program record and six
NCAA qualifying times, as the Emory men and women each recorded a
third-place finish at the University Athletic Association (UAA)
Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The Emory men scored 164 points during the meet, finishing behind
Carnegie Mellon University (198.50 points) and the University of
Chicago (180 points), as the Eagles recorded their 11th top-three
conference finish. The women scored 116.50 points, falling
behind Washington University (259 points) and the University of
Chicago (243.50), marking the team's fourth-straight top-three
finish and 17th overall.
Senior Frederick Linton made a strong case for his
third-consecutive UAA Most Valuable Performer honor, setting UAA
records in three events. Linton set a school and UAA record
in the 200-meter dash, recording a first-place finish with a NCAA
automatic qualifying time of 21.10 seconds in the event, the
fastest time by a Division III runner this season. The senior
would go on to record a mark of 48.17 seconds in the 400-meter
dash, both a UAA record and a provisional qualifying time.
Linton would later run the anchor leg on the 4x400-meter relay team
with Jim LePorte, Naoki Murai,
and Jason Campbell, helping the team to a
first-place finish in the event with a UAA record and provisional
time of 3:16.32. Linton's final first-place finish came as
part of the 4x100-meter relay team with LePorte, Tyler
Faits, and Alex Greenhouse, as the team
recorded a provisional qualifying time of 41.68.
Greenhouse would also record a first-place finish in the 100-meter
dash with a time of 10.82 seconds in the finals, and a second-place
finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a provisional qualifying time
of 53.67 seconds. Senior Jake Wheeler
recorded a first-place finish in the javelin throw, setting a track
record of 56.41 meters in the event.
Other top finishers for the Eagles include Steve
Dry in the 110-meter hurdles (second place, 15.24
seconds), Faits in the 200-meter dash (second-place, 22.00
seconds), Charles Meade in the 1,500-meter run
(second-place, 3:57.91), Tommy Fyffe in the
3,000-meter steeplechase (9:34.02), and the Eagles' 4x800-meter
relay team of Alex Robin, Nicolas
Price, Nicolai Lundy, and Jason
Campbell (second-place, 7:55.72).
Rebecca Willett, Jordan Beall,
and Tracy Whittaker recorded the three first-place
finishes of the meet for the Emory women. Willett took
first-place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:20.75 in the
finals, slightly behind her mark of 2:19.14 in the preliminary
round. Beall won the long jump for the second-consecutive
year, recording a distance of 5.49 meters, her best mark of the
year. Whittaker claimed the top spot in the pole vault,
matching a school-record by clearing a height of 3.35 meters.
Emory made a strong showing in the relays as well. The
4x100-meter relay team of Alisha Reynolds,

The Eagles were hurt somewhat by the loss of their top sprinter,
freshman Jami Edwards, who finished first in the
preliminaries of the 100-meter dash, and second in the
preliminaries of the 200-meter dash. She did not compete in
the finals of the events after sustaining an injury earlier in the
meet.
Emory will return to action next weekend, sending a partial squad
to the Drake Relays, as the Eagles will begin to turn their
attention towards the NCAA Championships on May 22nd.
EMORY TRACK AND FIELD PLANS A STRONG SHOWING AT THE UAA
CHAMPIONSHIPS
(Apr. 16) The Emory University Track and Field team will travel to
the University of Chicago (Ill.) for the University Athletic
Association (UAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championships from April
19th-20th.

second-place finish last season, as the Eagles fell just 1.5 points
short of the 2007 UAA Outdoor Championship. The Emory women
will look to make better on their third-place finish last
season.
Heading into the meet, the men's team looks to be particularly
strong in the sprint events. The Eagles feature the top-three

resting in preparation for next week's UAA event. Emory will
be sending its men's 4x400-meter relay team of Frederick
Linton, Naoki Murai, Tyler
Faits, and Alex Greenhouse to the meet,
as the squad will look to register an NCAA qualifying time in the
event.
The meet will be held at Clemson University's Rock Norman Track and

time this season. Emory responded well to the challenge,
starting with sophomore Alex Greenhouse, who
recorded a time of 53.16 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles, the

Greenhouse finished ninth in the event.
Senior Frederick Linton finished atop the
standings in the developmental 400-meter dash, recording a
provisional qualifying time of 47.85 seconds, a season-best mark

EMORY TRACK AND FIELD TO MAKE A RUN AT THE UAA
CHAMPIONSHIP
(Mar. 6) The Emory University Track and Field Team will go
against some of the toughest Division III competition it will face
this season, as the Eagles will travel to Cleveland, Ohio for the
University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship Meet this
weekend.
"I can't remember going into a UAA Indoor Championship when we have
as wide open a competition for the conference title as we see this
year," said Emory Head Coach John Curtin.
"If you go by the conference rankings four teams have a legitimate
shot at the men's team title and at least three do on the women's
side."
The Emory men will enter the meet following a second-place finish
last season, featuring the top 1,600-meter relay time in the UAA
this season. Top Emory individual runners entering the meet
include Frederick Linton, who has ran the fastest
UAA times in the 55-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash
this season, and Steve Dry, who has paced the UAA
with his time in the 55-meter hurdles.
On the women's side, the Eagles will be looking to improve on their
third-place finish from last year. Top competitors for the
Eagles will include Jami Edwards, who has recorded
the top-UAA time in the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter dash this
season, along with Rebecca Willett, Lauren
Shores, and Brittany Donino, who have
recorded the second-best UAA times in the 800-meter run, the
5,000-meter run and the 55-meter hurdles, respectively.
Coach Curtin indicated, however, that the competition is raised a
level once the Association's Championship meet begins.
"We all know the rankings go out the window with the start of
competition Friday and it is decided by who is ready to compete,"
said Curtin.
Both Emory teams have put themselves in a position to come away
from the meet with a championship. The men have won six UAA
Indoor Titles in the past, the last in 2004, while the women have
come away from the meet just once, in 1995, but have finished in
the top-three in 14 of the 20 years of competition.
"Our kids are fit and healthy for the most part and they are ready
to make their run at it. We have a tremendous group that has
invested a lot of effort in this season to get us to this point,"
said Curtin. "I like our chances."
The meet is slated to last throughout the day on Friday and
Saturday, March 7th-8th. Fans wishing to follow the event can
go to the championship website, at for a live webcast,
performance lists, live results and more.

THE TIGER INDOOR INVITATIONAL
(Feb. 14) The Emory University Track and Field team will
be well represented in Clemson, SC this weekend, as the Eagles will
be sending a full squad to the 2008 Tiger Indoor Invitational this
weekend.
The meet is slated to begin at 5:00 PM on Friday night, and run
through the end of Saturday. Emory will be one of 27 teams
attending the event, including major Division I schools such as the
University of Georgia, the University of Alabama, and the
University of South Carolina. Clemson's facilities feature a
200-meter track, with seating for 1,800 spectators.
The Tiger Indoor Invitational will give Emory an opportunity to
test some of their top competitors, many of whom did not
participate in the Eagles' meet in Sewanee, TN last weekend.
The Emory men's squad will enter the meet ranked 17th in Division
III, while the women are ranked 20th.
11th-RANKED MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD FINISHES SEVENTH AT
THE TIGER INVITATIONAL
(Feb. 10) Despite competing with a limited squad of athletics at
its first scored meet of the season, the 11th-ranked Emory Men's
track and field team finished in seventh place at the 2008 Sewanee
Tiger Indoor Invitational.
Emory's athletes represented themselves well, as 15 personal-best
times were recorded at the meet. The Eagles were paced by
senior co-captain Jim LePorte, who set career-best
marks while finishing seventh in the 55-meter dash (6.67 seconds)
and sixth in the long jump (6.51 meters).
The Eagles scored 37 points during the meet, finishing 24 points
behind the winning squad, Division I's Troy University
(Ala.). The top-finishing Division III team, Mississippi
College, finished third with 51 points.
The Eagles will return to action next weekend, travelling to
Division I Clemson University (S.C.) to compete at the Clemson
Tiger Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
EMORY TRACK AND FIELD TO COMPETE AT ITS FIRST
TEAM-SCORING EVENT OF THE INDOOR SEASON
(Feb. 6) The Emory University Track and Field team will
hit the midway point of its season this weekend, as the Eagles will
travel to the University of the South (Tenn.) to compete at the
2008 Tiger Indoor Invitational. This will be the first meet
that the Eagles will participate in this season that will have team
scoring.
The meet will be held Saturday at the Fowler Center, a 160-meter
indoor track and field facility on the University of the South
campus in Sewanee, TN.
Emory will be one of 13 teams competing at the meet, most of which
are Division III institutions. The Eagles will be the only
ranked Division III team at the Tiger Indoor, as the Women enter
the meet ranked 10th in the nation, while the Men are 11th.
The Emory men's squad will enter the 2008 Tiger Indoor Invitational
following a first-place finish at the meet in 2007, and a
second-place finish in 2006. The women finished second in
2007 and third in 2006.
Fund Run 2008, held on Tuesday, February 5th, was a one hour
run-a-thon hosted by the Emory Track and Field team. Athletes
solicited donations based on whatever amount his or her sponsor
wished to pledge for each lap (400 meters) they can run in a one
hour period.
By donating to the 2008 Fund Run, you can see to it that the Emory
Track and Field tradition stays strong. You will also be
supporting the Special Olympics. Ten percent of all Fund Run
proceeds will be donated to the Special Olympics. Money
raised through your pledges will help the team by defraying the
cost of uniform replacement and of travel with our large
team. Gifts from last year's Fund Run helped finance our long
awaited school and stadium record boards, now proudly displayed
outside the track storage room near the finish line.
The track and field team is still accepting donations following the
fund run. Please take a minute to pledge whatever you can by
contacting assistant track and field coach Kevin Semanick at ksemani@emory.edu. Thank
you and remember your Fund Run contribution is tax deductible.
STRONG SHOWING FOR EMORY TRACK AND FIELD IN CHAPEL
HILL
(Feb. 3) The Emory University Track and Field team continued to
thrive against primarily NCAA Division I competition, as the Eagles
recorded another strong meet at the Texas Roadhouse Carolina
Classic, hosted by the University of North Carolina.
On the men's side, seven Eagles recorded personal-best times during
the meet. Each of Emory's three entrants in the mile run set
new career-best marks in the event, as sophomores Charles
Meade, Greg Decker, and Alex
Robin finished the event in times of 4:23.89, 4:32.35 and
4:33.34, respectively. Meade led the pack of Emory finishers,
claiming 13th-place in the event, while Decker finished 30th and
Robin finished 32nd out of 55 runners.
Emory's distance runners continued to perform well throughout the
day, as junior Nate Ennist finished 26th in the
3,000-meter run in a personal-best time of 9:17.79, while senior
co-captain Michael Rothbart recorded his new
career-best of 15:22.18 in the 5,000-meter run. Rothbart was

Winterhalter, who finished 12th in 15:39.33, a career-best
as well. The final career-record set was by sophomore
Fritz Hain, who finished 36th in the 60-meter
hurdles in a time of 9.03 seconds.
The Emory women saw another strong performance from senior
Tracy Whittaker, who set a career-record in the
pole vault for the third-consecutive meet, jumping 3.40 meters in
the event. She was complemented nicely by Emory's distance
runners, as sophomore Carla Sue Heyler finished
14th in the 5,000-meter run, and was followed close behind by
18th-place finisher, freshman Jennifer
Feinberg.
The Eagles also made a strong showing in the mile run, as senior

21st place in a personal-best time of 5:19.64. Freshman
Alisha Reynolds turned in two strong performances
as well, setting a new personal best in the 200-meter dash with a
time of 28.39, while also recording Emory's top finish in the
400-meter dash with a mark of 1:02.26.
Emory will be back in action next weekend, as the Eagles will send
a full squad to Sewanee, TN, to compete at the Tiger Indoor
Invitational at the University of the South (Tenn.), on Saturday,
February 9th.

Dick Taylor Track at the Eddie Smith Fieldhouse.
MORE EMORY TRACK AND FIELD RECORDS FALL AT THE CAPTAIN'S
INVITATIONAL
(Jan. 27) Emory University athletes continued to make a
run at the school's record books, as three more Emory Indoor Track
and Field records fell during competition at the Captain's
Invitational in Newport News, Va.
Emory sophomore Steve Dry broke the school record
in the 60-meter hurdles, recording a time of 8.22 seconds, good to
provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships. Dry
finished third overall in the event.
Other top performers for the Emory men included Frederick
Linton, who finished second in the 60-meter dash,
recording a time of 6.97 seconds, the second-fastest mark in school

dash this season, finishing the event third in a time of 22.58
seconds.
Freshman Jason Campbell finished second in the
800-meter run, and was followed close behind by junior teammate
Nicolas Price, who claimed third in the

Lundy and Alex Robin to finish third in
the 4x800-meter relay.
For the women, freshman Jami Edwards continued her
record-setting season, finishing first in the 200-meter dash in a
school-record time of 26.08 seconds. Edwards also finished
fifth in the 60-meter dash, as her time of 7.91 seconds fell just
five-hundredths of a second short of her own school record.
Senior Tracy Whittaker also set a new
school-record, clearing a height of 3.30 meters in the pole vault
and finishing fourth overall in the event. Whittaker broke
her previous school record of 3.20 meters.
A number of other Emory women also claimed first-place finishes at
the meet. Senior Lauren Shores finished atop
the standing in the mile with a time of 5:12.75, while junior
Natalie Waryck finished first in the 3,000-meter
run in a time of 10:38.75. The two later combined with

Invitational. Competition at the meet will begin Friday,
February 1st, and last through Saturday.
EMORY TO SEND A FULL SQUAD TO THE CAPTAIN'S
INVITATIONAL
(Jan. 24) The Emory University Track and Field Team will
continue its 2007-08 indoor campaign this weekend, as the Eagles
will head to Newport News, VA, to compete at the Captain's
Invitation at Christopher Newport University (Va.).
The Eagles will be sending a full contingent of athletes to the
meet following a successful performance at the Niswonger
Invitational last weekend, including University Athletic
Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week, Frederick
Linton and Jami Edwards. This will
be Emory's first appearance at the Captain's Invitational since the
2005 indoor track and field season.
The meet will take place at the Freeman Center Fieldhouse, on the
Vince Brown Track, a six-lane, 200 meter track. Competition
will last throughout the day Friday and Saturday.
LINTON NAMED THE UAA ATHLETE OF THE WEEK FOR MEN'S TRACK
AND FIELD
(Jan. 23) Emory University senior Frederick Linton was named the
University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week for Men's
Track and Field, based on his record-setting performance at the
Niswonger Invitational last weekend.
Linton established a school record and an NCAA Division III
provisional qualifying time in the 400-meter dash at the
meet. Competing against some of the top collegiate and open
division runners in the South, the senior posted a time of 48.82
seconds in the preliminary heats, breaking the old school mark of
48.97 seconds, set in 1994. Linton also recorded a time of
7.06 seconds in the 60-meter dash, the third-fastest time in school
history and just eight-hundredths of a second shy of his school
record.
This marks the second time this season that Linton has been named
the UAA's Athlete of the Week. The senior will be back in
action, along with the rest of Emory's squad, at the Captain's
Invitational Meet in Newport News, VA, on Friday and Saturday.
DISTANCE RUNNERS SHINE FOR EMORY DURING THE FINAL DAY OF
THE NISWONGER INVITATIONAL
(Jan. 19) After Emory's sprinters took center stage during day one
of the Niswonger Indoor Invitational, the second day was all about
the distance runners for the Eagles. With most running
competitively for the first time since the end of the cross country
season, many turned in strong performances to begin their indoor
track campaign.
Saturday saw just two of the members of the women's track team
compete. Junior Natalie Waryck set a
collegiate-best mark in the 5,000-meter run, finishing eighth
overall with a mark of 18:27.46. Emory's other runner,
sophomore Rebecca Flink, came in seventh in the
3,000-meter run in a time of 11:08.19.
For Emory's men, freshman Jason Campbell finished
second in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:59.00. He was
followed closely by Nicolas Price (fourth) and
Nicolai Lundy (ninth). Both Charles
Meade and Greg Decker were top-10
finishers in the mile, as Meade finished fourth in a career-best
time of 4:26.30, while Decker finished ninth with a mark of
4:33.58. Senior co-captain Michael Rothbart
was Emory's top finisher in the 5,000-meter run, finishing 13th
overall, while sophomore Paul Winterhaulter led
the pack of Eagles in the 3,000-meter run, finishing 12th.
Sophomore Steve Dry led the way for Emory's
sprinters and jumpers, finishing fourth in the 60-meter hurdle
finals with a time of 8.69 seconds. In the unseeded long
jump, freshman Brad Pruente had a strong start to
his Emory career in the event, finishing third with a distance of
6.36 meters.
Next up for the Eagles will be the Captains Invitational, hosted by
Christopher Newport University (Va.). Emory will travel to
Newport News, VA to compete next Friday and Saturday.
LINTON'S RECORD IN THE 400 HIGHLIGHTS THE OPENING DAY OF
THE NISWONGER INVITATIONAL
(Jan. 18) Emory University senior Frederick
Linton set an Indoor Track school record in the 400-meter
dash while competing at the Niswonger Invitational at East
Tennessee State University. Linton finished the qualifying
round of the event fourth overall in a time of 48.82 seconds, and
will advance to the finals on Saturday at 4:35 PM.
Linton bested the previous record time of 48.97 seconds, set by
former Eagle Chris Williams at the 1994 NCAA Indoor
Championships. Williams' time was good for an All-America
finish in the event at the meet.
Other highlights from day one of competition included sophomore
Steve Dry, who qualified for the finals in the
60-meter hurdles, finishing the preliminary round 10th overall in a
time of 8.68 seconds. The time was the second-best mark of
Dry's career, and the 10th-best time in school history in the
event. He will advance to the finals round on Saturday at
5:25 PM.
In the 200-meter dash, senior Jim LePorte and
sophomore Alex Greenhouse each turned in
career-best times, finishing with marks of 22.64 and 22.76 seconds
respectively.
Competition will resume from the Niswonger Invitational on Saturday
at 8:00 AM.
EMORY TRACK AND FIELD LOOKS TO START OFF STRONG IN
2008
(Jan. 16) The Emory University Track and Field team will
look to carry its success from 2007 into 2008, as the Eagles will
travel to Johnson City, Tennessee for the Niswonger Foundation
Track and Field Invitational.
The meet, hosted by East Tennessee State University, will run from
Friday, January 18th until Saturday, January 19th. All events will
be held at the indoor track and field facilties at the Memorial
Center on the East Tennessee campus.
This season will mark the 30th anniversary of the meet, which
features some of the world's top collegiate, post collegiate and
professional athletes. East Tennessee expects 60-80
collegiate teams from all levels to participate at the Niswonger
Invitational.
EMORY TRACK AND FIELD HAS AN ENCOURAGING START TO THE
SEASON AT THE CLEMSON OPENER
(Dec. 2) The Emory University Track and Field team made an
impressive showing to start its 2007-08 indoor season, recording a
number of impressive performances against mostly Division I
competition at the Clemson Opener.
On the second day of competition, the Emory men's team was once
again paced by senior Frederick Linton. The
2007 All-American recorded his second NCAA provisional qualifying
time of the meet, finishing fifth in the 400-meter dash with a time
of 49.22 seconds. Linton also finished 10th in the finals of
the 60-meter dash, recording a time of 6.98.
Linton also teamed with Naoki Murai, Alex
Greenhouse and Nicolas Price on the
Eagles' 1,600-meter relay team, which took 11th-place in the
event. Other top finishers for the Emory men's team included
Greenhouse, who took 20th-place in the 200-meter dash in a time of
22.98, and Price, who finished 16th in the 800-meter dash with a
time of 2:02.69.
On the women's side, sophomore Sara Price took
19th-place in the triple jump with a distance of 10.31 meters, a
new career-best mark which would have been the second-best distance
on the team last season. Price also claimed 46th-place in the
400-meter dash, and teamed with Eleanor Fitall,
Brittany Donino, and Alisha
Reynolds on the 1,600-meter relay team to finish 26th in a
time of 4:16.69.
Other top performers for the women included freshman Jami
Edwards, who finished 28th in the 200-meter dash in a time
of 26.52, and junior Katie Sheehan, who finished
44th in the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:05.56.
The Clemson Opener will be the lone meet this season in the 2007
calendar year for Emory. The Eagles will resume the season on
Friday, January 18th, 2008, at the Eastern Tennessee State
University Niswonger Invitational meet.
EMORY TRACK AND FIELD MAKES A STRONG DEBUT AT THE
CLEMSON OPENER
(Dec. 1) Despite it being the first intercollegiate meet of the
2007-08 Indoor Track and Field season for Emory, the Eagles looked
to be in midseason form while competing against a number of
Division I schools at the Clemson opener.
On the men's side, senior Frederick Linton
recorded a provisional qualifying time and set a new-school record,
finishing the 60-meter dash preliminaries in a time of 6.94
seconds. Linton will try to better the time on Saturday, when
he competes in the event's finals.
Also competing in the 60-meter dash for Emory were Alex
Greenhouse and Brandon Whitney, who each
set personal-best marks in the event. In the 60-meter
hurdles, Steve Dry led all Eagles by finishing
21st in his collegiate-best time of 8.88 seconds. Freshman
Brad Pruente finished 24th in the 60-meter hurdles
in a time of 9.06, followed closely by Fritz Hain,
who finished 27th in a time of 9.40 seconds.
Rounding out the day for Emory was Jim LePorte,
who finished ninth in the long jump with a career-best mark of 6.41
meters.
For the women's team, freshman Jami Edwards made
an impressive debut, finishing 22nd in the 60-meter dash with a
time of 7.86 seconds, just .02 seconds shy of a provisional
qualifying time. She was followed by Alisha
Reynolds and Eleanor Fitall, who finished
52nd and 60th, respectively, in the 60-meter dash.
Katie Sheehan and Brittany Donino
recorded back-to-back finishes in the 60-meter hurdles, taking
38th- and 39th-place respectively. Donino also finished 22nd
in the long jump, recording a distance of 5.11 meters.
The Eagles will look to keep the momentum going on Saturday, for
the second and final day of competition at the Clemson Opener.
EMORY TRACK AND FIELD TO OPEN ITS 2007-08
SEASON
(Nov. 27) When the final race was complete at the 2007 University
Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championship,
Emory had done all it could to make a run at the conference
title. Heading into the final event, the 4x400-meter relay,
the Eagles needed a first-place finish and Carnegie Mellon to
finish sixth or seventh in the event to complete a come-from-behind
run for the title. Emory handled their end, finishing first
in the event in a conference-record time, but Carnegie Mellon came
in fifth, finishing 1.5 points ahead of the Eagles to claim the UAA
title.
While the loss was devastating for the Eagles at the time, the
memory of it might fuel the Emory Men's Track and Field team to
greater success in the 2007-08 season.
"I think that still weighs pretty heavy on most of the guys who are
returning," said Emory head coach John Curtin. "Every kid on
the team has made a commitment to make sure that they will make up
for that point and a half that we came up short."
The Eagles will be led by senior co-captain Fred
Linton, who earned all-America honors after finishing
fourth in the nation in the 400-meter dash during the NCAA Division
III Outdoor Championship meet last season. Between the indoor
and outdoor seasons, Linton claimed the UAA title in three
individual events and as part of three relay teams, and was named
the UAA's Most Outstanding Performer at the Outdoor championship
meet.
"I wouldn't be surprised to see Freddie [Linton] run a provisional
qualifying time [at the Clemson Opener]," said Curtin. "It is
kind of unheard of to hear people qualifying before the first of
the year, but I think he is in that kind of shape right now."
Other returning all-UAA performers include sophomores Alex
Greenhouse, Steve Dry, Tommy
Fyffe, and Alex Robin, juniors
Nicolai Lundy, and Nicolas Price
and seniors Jordan Knight, Jim
LePorte, Naoki Murai, Jake
Randolph, and Wesley Wheeler.
"We maybe have the deepest team we have had in the last four or
five years," said Curtin. "I think we are going to have some
really strong relay performances."
The Eagles will receive an early test to their season, as they will
send their top performers to Clemson, SC to take part in the
Clemson Opener from Friday, November 30th through Saturday,
December 1st. Emory will have an opportunity to run on one of
the fastest tracks in the country, but will also be facing some of
the best Division I track and field programs in the country at the
meet.
Later in the season, Emory will head to Case Western Reserve
University (Ohio) for the University Athletic Association (UAA)
Indoor Championships (March 7th-8th), where the Eagles will try to
improve on their second-place finish last season. Following
the conference championship meet, qualifying runners will travel to
Ohio Northern University to conclude the indoor season with the
NCAA Division III National Championships (March 14th-15th).
EMORY TRACK AND FIELDS ADDS DEMARCO AS ASSISTANT
COACH
(Aug. 7) The Emory University Track and Field team added
former Emory All-American athlete Ashley DeMarco to its coaching
staff for the 2007-08 year.
"Ashley was a tireless worker as an athlete who set her goals very high and had the discipline and competitive nature to see them through," said Head Coach John Curtin. "As a coach she is bringing those same attributes to her work."
DeMarco was a four-time letter-winner for the Eagles. Serving as the team's captain during her senior season, she earned All-America honors in the heptathlon and finished her career as the school-record holder in the event. DeMarco ended her Emory career as a three-time University Athletic Association (UAA) Champion, and was the 2007 Bridges Award winner, presented annually to Emory's best all-around athlete.
"Being a member of Emory's track team during my undergraduate career was such a positive experience that I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to give back to the program as a coach," said DeMarco. "It is very exciting to be able to share my passion for the sport with this talented and dedicated group of student-athletes."
Ashley holds a USA Track and Field level one coaching certification. She will be working with the high jumpers, hurdlers and throwers during the 2007-08 indoor and outdoor track seasons.
"Ashley has always been like a coach on the field, the only difference now is we are paying her for it. We are very lucky to have her," said Curtin.
DeMarco was a two-time nominee for an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, and a four time UAA All-Academic honoree, prior to graduating from Emory in May 2007.
