Five Members of the Emory Men’s Track & Field/ Cross Country Teams Earn Academic All-District Honors

Emory University seniors Steve Dry, Tommy Fyffe, Alex Greenhouse, Alex Robin and Greg Decker were all named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Track & Field/ Cross Country First Team for their academic and athletic achievements during the 2009-10 school year.

The five first team track and field/ cross country honorees are more than any other school in either the university or college divisions.  This is the second-consecutive year that Dry, Fyffe and Greenhouse have received the honor, while Robin and Decker earned their first career academic all-district honor.  Dry also went on to earn Academic all-America Third Team honors last season.

During the course of his career, Dry twice earned all-University Athletic Association (UAA) honors in both the 55-meter hurdles during the indoor season, and the 110-meter hurdles in the outdoor season.  His season-best times from this campaign include marks of 7.86 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles and 15.10 in the 110-meter hurdles.  Academically, Dry has recorded a remarkable 3.99 grade point average as a Chemistry and Religion dual major, earning a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and the Bobby Jones Scholarship.

Fyffe earned second team all-UAA and all-Region honors during the 2009 Cross Country Season, which included first place finishes at both the Foothills Invitational and the University of the South Invitational.  During this indoor track season, he won the 5,000-meter run for the second time of his career.  A three-time Academic all-UAA honoree, Fyffe has recorded a 3.75 grade point average as a business major while at Emory.

Greenhouse recently earned his fourth career all-America certificate, finishing third overall in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.  Earlier in the year, he was named the Outdoor Track Performer of the Year for the UAA after winning the 100-meter dash and the 400-meter hurdles, and earned the USTFCCCA’s Regional Men’s Indoor Runner of the Year honors.  Over his career, he has amassed 10 UAA Championships and 20 all-UAA finishes.  Greenhouse has a 3.65 GPA, while majoring in Business Finance and Accounting with a minor in Economics.

Robin won the UAA Championship in both the indoor and outdoor 800-meter run during the 2010 season, in addition to running a leg on Emory’s UAA Championship 4x800-meter relay during the outdoor season.  He recorded a career-best time of 1:52.92 in the 800-meter run at the Dr. Keeler Invitational, good for a provisional qualifying time.  During the cross country season, Robin earned all-South/ Southeast Region honors, in addition to being named the team’s Most Improved Runner.  He recorded a cumulative GPA of 3.43 as a biology major.

Decker had a career year for the Eagles, winning the UAA Championship in the outdoor 10,000-meter run and later recording a school record and provisional qualifying time of 30:55.94.  He also provisionally qualified in the 5,000-meter run with a mark of 14:38.71, the second-fastest in school history.  Decker, an Academic all-UAA honoree, recorded a 3.58 GPA as an Environmental Studies and Biology dual major.

By virtue of being named to the all-district first team all five will be placed on the ballot for the ESPN the Magazine Academic Track and Field all-America team.

Voting for the Academic All-District team is conducted by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Emory nominees represent the "college division" in District 3 which is composed of NCAA Division II and III, and NAIA schools in the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
