Emory Men Take First, Women Third, at the Emory Invitational

In the Eagles’ first outdoor track and field meet of the season, and on the team’s home track, the Emory University men finished first, while the women came in third, at the Emory Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

The Emory men totaled 148 points during the two-day meet, finishing ahead of second-place Hope College (134.5 points) and third-place Cedarville University (130 points).  There were 13 total teams on the men’s side of the meet.

Emory was paced by senior sprinter Alex Greenhouse, who recorded a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Championships with a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a mark of 53.25 seconds, the fifth-fastest mark in school history.  Greenhouse later won the 200-meter dash in a time of 21.96 seconds.

Emory also received first-place finishes from its 4x800-meter relay team of Stephen Ellwood, Kevin Lanza, Aaron Gregg and Jason Campbell (7:50.07), Anthony Lombardo in the pole vault (4.45 meters), and Ben Euwer in the shot put (13.71 meters). Second-place finishers in the meet for Emory included Everett Bryant in the 110-meter hurdles (15.66 seconds), Eric Lawson in the unseeded 1,500-meter run (4:12.81), Tyler Faits in the 400-meter dash (49.19 seconds) and Paul Winterhalter in the 5,000-meter run (15:12.92).  Emory also received a second-place finish from its 4x100-meter relay team of Nelson Nwannunu, Greenhouse, Bryant and Faits (42.85 seconds).

The Emory women totaled 126 points during the meet, finishing behind first-place Cedarville (143 points) and second-place Hope (135 points).  There were 12 women’s teams competing at the meet.

Emory senior Brittany Donino was able to record a provisional qualifying time in the 100-meter hurdles during the meet, winning the finals of the event with a time of 14.84 seconds, the eighth-fastest time in school history.  Donino also finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.11, and joined Jasmine McCullough, Hadiza Sa-Aadu, Mary Crystal Spence on Emory’s third-place 4x100-meter relay team (49.79 seconds).

Emory’s Natalie Fenn recorded a first-place finish as well during the meet, claiming the top spot in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:40.82.  Teammate Rebecca Flink finished close behind Fenn, with a time of 11:59.75 for second place.

Other second-place finishers for Emory at the meet included Kara Cutrona in the shot put (10.43 meters), Melanie Frank in the 800-meter run (2:19.27), the Eagles’ 4x800-meter relay of Christina Cardy, Calley Edwards, Sabrina Jeppsson and Frank (9:39.08) and their 4x400-meter relay team of Melanie Levy, Kaele Leonard, Sa-Aadu and Spence.

With one meet behind them in the outdoor season, the Eagles will now look forward to hosting their second and final home meet of the season next week.  Starting on Thursday, March 25th, Emory will host the Emory Decathlon/ Heptathlon, followed by the Emory Classic on Friday and Saturday.
