2010-11 Season Recap: Emory Men’s Indoor Track & Field

2010-11 Season Recap: Emory Men’s Indoor Track & Field

The Emory University men’s track and field team turned in another successful indoor season during the 2010-11 campaign, recording its fifth-consecutive top three finish at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships.

Although the squad did not have a participant at the NCAA Division III Championships, Emory saw three of its athletes reach provisional qualifying marks during the season.  Senior Everett Bryant recorded a provisional time of 7.75 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles, and his season-best time of 8.47 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles was the sixth-fastest in school history.  Junior Ian Francis reached 14.30 meters in the triple jump at the UAA Championships, the fourth-best distance in school history and good for provisional qualification as well.  Sophomore Nelson Nwannunu also had a provisional mark in the long jump, reaching 6.94 meters, the fourth-longest jump in school history.

Sophomore Tony Lombardo recorded the four best pole vault marks in school history during the season, clearing a school-record height of 4.53 meters at the UAA Championships.  Other top performances during the season included junior Ben Euwer’s shot put of 14.35 meters at the UNC Kent Taylor Invitational and sophomore Isaac Chambers’ time of 1:08.59 in the 500-meter dash, each the second-best mark in school history.  Francis’ time of 37.21 seconds in the 300-meter dash at the Orange and Purple Classic was the fourth-best time ever by an Eagle, while sophomore Stephen Ellwood’s time of 4:20.42 in the mile run at the UNC Kent Taylor Invitational was the ninth-best time in the program’s history.  In addition, the Eagles’ distance medley relay team of junior Manvir Heir, freshman Nick Cortellessa, senior Ty Trumbo and senior Kevin Lanza recorded a time of 10:29.33 seconds at the UAA Championships, the eight-best time in Emory history.

During their conference championships, the Eagles totaled 66 points, finishing behind first place Washington University (161 points) and the second-place University of Chicago (100 points).  The third-place finish was the 14th top-three finish at the UAA Championships in the program’s history.

Francis recorded the lone championship for Emory, winning the triple jump at UAAs.  Junior Xavier Fowler (triple jump), freshman Scott Greathouse (high jump), Lombardo (pole vault) and the Eagles’ 4x400-meter relay team of Francis, senior Jason Campbell, Chambers and freshman Mike Moserowitz each picked up top-three finishes at the meet for Emory.
