Emory Track & Field Strong Again in Late Season Meets

Just two weeks away from the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Emory University continued to turn in a number of impressive times during a pair of weekend meets – the Dr. Keeler Invitational in Naperville, IL and the Clemson Final Qualifier in Clemson, SC.

At the Dr. Keeler Invitational, junior Tess Gallegos opened competition for Emory on Thursday with a time of 18:45.36 in the 5,000-meter run, finishing 26th.  On Friday, sophomore Melanie Frank set a career-best mark in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:42.97, finishing 19th overall.  In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, senior Natalie Fenn claimed 15th-place with a time of 11:11.43, while junior Sara Gelb finished 23rd with a mark of 11:30.03.

Meanwhile, on the first day of competition at the Clemson Final Qualifier on Friday, the Emory men had two near misses of NCAA provisional qualifying times.  In the 110-meter hurdles, senior Everett Bryant ran a time of 14.94 seconds, just four hundredths of a second above the provisional time, finishing 20th in the event.  Bryant added a time of 11.55 seconds in the 100-meter dash, claiming 31st place. 

Senior Jason Campbell set a new career record in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:53.07, .37 seconds slower than the provisional mark and good for a 15th-place finish at the meet.  Freshman Mike Moserowitz added a leap of 6.50 meters to finish 18th in the long jump, capping off the men’s first-day performances.

For the women on the first day, junior Jasmine McCullough recorded an NCAA automatic qualifying time in the 100-meter hurdles for the second-straight meet, running a time of 14.52 seconds and finishing 21st.  Freshman Morgan Monroe took 27th in the event with a time of 15.49 seconds.

The Eagles were also represented in the women’s 100-meter dash, where junior Alix Dyer finished 23rd with a time of 12.43 seconds, McCullough finished 24th with a time of 12.56 seconds, and Monroe claimed 26th with a time of 12.69 seconds.

The Emory women added a pair of provisional qualifying marks on the second day at Clemson as well.  Junior Lauren Attiah reached 11.58 meters in the triple jump, good for a provisional mark and a 10th-place finish.  She was also part of the Eagles’ 4x100-meter relay team, joining McCullough, senior Alycia Adams, and Dyer for a sixth-place finish in a provisional time of 48.25 seconds. 

In the women’s 200-meter dash, Dyer finished 22nd with a time of 25.74 seconds, while Adams took 25th in a mark of 25.98 seconds.  In the 400-meter dash, senior Alicia Reynolds led all Eagles with a time of 59.69 seconds, placing 23rd, while sophomore Kaele Leonard finished right behind her in 24th-place with a time of 1:01.14.  Reynolds, Adams, Leonard and Dyer also comprised Emory’s third-place 4x400-meter relay team, which recorded a time of 4:00.44.  Rounding out the meet for the women, junior Charlotte Diggs placed 12th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.38, while junior Laura Lambie-Hanson was 13th with a mark of 1:06.10.

For the men, the Eagles’ 4x400-meter relay team of sophomore Isaac Chambers, junior Ian Francis, Moserowitz and Campbell claimed fourth with a time of 3:21.38.  Chambers also placed 16th in the 400-meter dash in a time of 50.22 seconds.  In the triple jump, Francis finished seventh (14.04 meters), junior Xavier Fowler claimed ninth (13.85 meters) and Moserowitz took 12th (13.08 meters).

Next up for the Eagles will be the Gregory Invitational in Naperville, IL from May 19th – 20th, the team’s final scheduled meet of the season before the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 26th and 27th.
