Emory Women Win UAA Indoor Track & Field Championships; Men Finish Third

The Emory University women's track and field team claimed victory at the 2011 University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Track & Field Championships, winning the indoor team championship for the first time since 1995.  Emory's men finished third at the meet.

The team championship was the second indoor title in the history of the Emory women's track and field program.  It also marks the second-straight season the Eagles have won the UAA women's track and field championship, after the squad claimed the outdoor title in 2010.  It is the seventh overall UAA championship (indoor and outdoor seasons) for the women's program.

Emory's women scored 119.50 points during the meet, besting second-place Washington University (Mo.), which scored 109.50 and third-place host University of Chicago, which scored 99.50 points.

Leading the way for the Eagles were the sprinters, who swept the all-UAA honors in the 200-meter dash.  Senior Alycia Adams won her first-career UAA Championship with a time of 26.28 seconds in the event.  Junior Alix Dyer finished second in the event (26.43 seconds), while freshman Gabrielle Clark claimed third (26.54 seconds).

Dyer also won the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.69 seconds, while sophomore Kaele Leonard earned all-UAA honors with a second-place finish in a time of 59.95 seconds.  Senior Alisha Reynolds scored in the event with a sixth-place finish in the finals.

The Emory women's 4x400-meter relay team capped off the victory, as Clark, Adams, Dyer and Leonard won the final event of the day with a time of 4:00.39, the fourth event championship won by the Eagles at the meet.

Clark earned another all-UAA honor with a second-place finish in the 55-meter dash (7.42 seconds), while junior Jasime McCullough claimed third with a time of 7.50 seconds.  Freshman Morgan Monroe earned an all-UAA honor with a second-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles (8.74 seconds), while junior Laura Lambie-Hanson scored four points for the team with a fourth-place finish in the event.

Sophomore Theresa Ford earned all-UAA honors with a third-place finish in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.58 meters.  Freshman Melissa Notis also scored in the event, finishing fifth after the jump off.  After winning the long jump on the first day, junior Lauren Attiah recorded her second all-UAA honor of the meet with a second-place finish in the triple jump, with a distance of 11.20 meters.

Also scoring for Emory on the second day were freshman Rasheika Martin, who finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 11.10 meters, and junior Tess Gallegos, who finished fifth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:20.38.

On the men's side, Emory scored 66 points to finish third overall, behind UAA Champion Washington University (161 points) and second-place Chicago (100 points).  The Eagles were 11 points ahead of third-place Carnegie Mellon University, giving the team its fifth-consecutive top-three finish at the UAA Indoor Championships.

Junior Ian Francis won his first-career UAA Championship, finishing first in the triple jump.  His leap of 14.30 meters was good for both an NCAA provisional qualifying distance, and the fourth-longest mark in school history.  Junior Xavier Fowler also earned all-UAA honors in the event with a third-place finish (14.05 meters), while freshman Mike Moserowitz scored for the Eagles with a fifth-place finish (13.90 meters).

The Eagles received an all-UAA finish from their men's 4x400-meter relay team of Chambers, Campbell, Francis and Moserowitz, which claimed second-place with a time of 3:26.10.

Also scoring for the Emory men during the second day of the meet were senior Everett Bryant in the 55-meter hurdles (8.16 seconds, fifth place), sophomore Isaac Chambers in the 400-meter dash (51.97 seconds, fifth place), senior Jason Campbell in the 800-meter run (1:56.51, fourth place), and junior Ben Euwer in the shot put (13.87 meters, fourth place).

All together, the Emory women totaled four UAA event championships and 12 all-UAA honors.  The Emory men had one conference championship and four all-UAA honors.

The Eagles will now begin to prepare for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in two weeks, as Emory will head to the North Central College Last Chance Qualifier next weekend, in Naperville, Ill.
