The Emory University men’s and women’s track and
field teams combined for 19 top-10 finishes, and three members of
the men’s squad recorded top-10 marks in the program’s
history, at the Kent Taylor Invitational at the University of North
Carolina on Saturday.
On the men’s side, the Eagles recorded three third-place
finishes, headline by sophomore Stephen Ellwood,
who claimed third in the mile run with a time of 4:20.42, the
eighth-fastest time in school history. Also claiming third
was Everett Bryant with a time of 8.52 seconds in
the 60-meter hurdles (the ninth-fastest in the program’s
history), and the Eagles’ 4x400-meter relay team of senior
Jason Campbell, freshman Nick
Cortellessa, freshman Cameron Edwards and
sophomore Pat Lanter, which recorded a mark of
3:32.00.
Emory junior Ben Euwer’s throw of 14.35
meters in the shot put was the second-longest in school history,
just .06 meters shot of Josh Heiber’s school record, set
during the 2004 season. Euwer also finished ninth in the
weight throw with a distance of 13.13 meters, as teammate and
senior Thomas Bright finished sixth in the weight
throw with a toss of 13.88 meters.
Other top-10 finishes for the Emory men at the meet came from
Cortellessa in the 500-meter run (ninth, 1:09.73), Campbell (fifth,
1:57.28) and Edwards (ninth, 2:00.43) in the 800-meter run, senior
Kevin Lanza in the mile run (seventh, 4:29.12),
junior Tim Halinski in the 3,000-meter run (ninth,
9:04.71), senior Brad Pruente in the 60-meter
hurdles (sixth, 8.83 seconds) and junior Xavier
Fowler in the triple jump (fourth, 13.20 meters).
For the women, senior Natalie Fenn claimed the
best finish of the day, placing fifth in the 3,000-meter run with a
time of 10:43.66. Also finishing in the top-10 in an event
for Emory were senior Alycia Adams, who placed
seventh in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:22.35, junior
Alix Dyer, who placed eighth in the 400-meter dash
with a time of 1:00.22, and the Eagles’ 4x400-meter relay
team of Adams, sophomore Alison Browne, junior
Charlotte Diggs, and junior Laura
Lambie-Hanson, which claimed eighth in a time of
4:13.07.
Other top finishers for Emory in events were freshman
Gabrielle Clark in the 60-meter dash
(19th, 8.19 seconds), Dyer in the 200-meter dash
(11th, 26.45 seconds), and freshman Morgan
Monroe in the 60-meter hurdles (14th, 9.68
seconds).
The Eagles will return to action next weekend, as Emory will be competing at the Niswonger Invitational at East Tennessee State University on Friday and Saturday, and the Tiger Indoor Invitational at the University of the South on Saturday.
