Eagles Open Season with Strong Performances at Clemson

The Emory University Indoor Track and Field team opened its 2011-12 campaign with a number of strong performances at Clemson University's Orange and Purple Classic on Saturday.

For the women, Emory was particularly strong in the sprint events.  Freshman Debora Adjibaba finished 21st in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.02 seconds, and was followed closely by senior Alix Dyer in 23rd place (8.03 seconds) and senior Hadiza Sa-Aadu (8.19 seconds).  In the hurdles, senior Jasmine McCullough finished ninth in the finals with a time of 9.15 seconds, the fifth-fastest mark in school history.

The Emory women also had a strong showing from its 4x400-meter relay team of Dyer, Adjibaba, senior Laura Lambie-Hanson and Sa-Aadu, which finished eighth in a time of 4:04.02, the 10th-fastest in school history.

Other top performers for the Emory women included sophomore Gabrielle Clark in the 300-meter dash (23rd-place, 43.82 seconds), senior Charlotte Diggs in the 500-yard dash (20th-place, 1:22.90), and sophomore Kadijah Ameen in the long jump (19th-place, 4.36 meters).

On the men's side, a pair of Eagles broke school records in events.  Junior Isaac Chambers broke his own program record in the 500-meter run, finishing 15th with a time of 1:07.51.  Sophomore William Matheson added an Emory record setting performance with a time of 2:40.72 in the 1,000-meter run finishing in seventh place.

The Eagles also had top-10 finishes from senior Ian Francis in the long jump (sixth-place, 6.56 meters) and their 4x400-meter relay team of Chambers, Francis, junior Jay Okeke and sophomore Mike Moserowitz (seventh-place, 3:35.92).  Other top finishers included Jide Lawal in the 60-meter dash (32nd-place, 7.49 seconds), freshman Evan Rhea in the 300-meter dash (18th place, 37.84 seconds), and freshman Ankush Mohile in the 60-meter hurdles (18th-place, 9.10 seconds).

Emory will wrap up the 2011 portion of its indoor track schedule on Thursday, December 8th, as the Eagles will travel to Birmingham-Southern College.
