Attiah Sets Emory Triple Jump Record at NCC Last Chance Invitational

Attiah Sets Emory Triple Jump Record at NCC Last Chance Invitational

Emory University senior Lauren Attiah broke her own school record in the women's triple jump at the North Central College Last Chance Qualifier in Naperville, IL on Friday night, leading the Eagles in the final meet before the NCAA Championships next week.

Attiah's jump of 11.89 meters not only demolished her previous school-record jump of 11.65 meters, but also put her in a prime position to qualify for next weekend's NCAA Division III Championships.  The senior's mark on Friday night ranks her 11th among all Division III triple jumpers this season, with one more day left for athletes to qualify.  Attiah finished third in the event at the meet, and added a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 5.45 meters, the 29th-best mark in Division III this season.

Senior Tess Gallegos turned in a strong performance as well with a time of 17:39.69 in the 5,000-meter run, the seventh-fastest in school history and 29th-best mark in Division III this season.

In the women's 60-meter dash, freshman Debora Adjibaba finished seventh with a time of 8.01 seconds, while junior Kaele Leonard claimed 13th-place in the event with a time of 8.24  seconds.  Senior Alix Dyer added a time of 58.17 seconds in the 400-meter dash, good for a ninth-place finish.

The Eagles also had a pair of relays in action on Friday.  The Eagles' 4x400-meter relay team of Adjibaba, sophomore Gabrielle Clark, Leonard and Dyer finished fourth with a time of 3:56.03, ranking 16th in Division III this season, putting the squad in position to qualify for the NCAA Championships.  Emory's distance medley relay team of junior Calley Edwards, Clark, sophomore Emily Caesar and freshman Stephanie Crane finished third with a time of 12:07.75, the 21st-best Division III mark this season.

The lone competitor for the Emory men at the meet was junior Stephen Ellwood, who finished fifth in the mile run with a season-best time of 4:18.54, the fifth-best time in school history in the indoor mile.

New for this season, the NCAA will be accepting the top 13 men and top 15 women in each individual event, and the top 10 teams in each relay into the NCAA Championships.  Currently in strong position to qualify for the Eagles, along with Attiah and the 4x400m Relay team, are senior Jasmine McCullough in the 60-meter hurdles (seventh in D-III with a time of 8.86 seconds), junior Theresa Ford in the high jump (tied for seventh in the high jump with a height of 1.68 meters) and senior Ian Francis in the triple jump (tied for seventh with a jump of 14.87 meters).

Other Eagles currently on the outside looking in are Adjibaba (17th in the 60m Dash), Dyer (18th in the 400m Dash), sophomore Scott Greathouse (15th in the high jump) and Francis (tied for 14th in the long jump).  However, nothing is official until the entrants are announced early next week.

The final list of athletes accepted into the NCAA Division III Championships will be announced on Monday by 9:00 AM.  Stayed tuned to EmoryAthletics.com for more details on Emory's qualifiers for the NCAA Championships.
