Leonard & Francis Claim UAA Athlete of the Week Honors

Emory University junior Kaele Leonard and senior Ian Francis were named the University Athletic Association's (UAA) Track and Field Athletes of the Week, following their performances at last Saturday's Bob Pollock Invitational.

Leonard ran a time of 56.54 seconds in the 400-meter run, to break the previous school record of 56.75 seconds, set by Alix Dyer in 2010.  The time was good for a ninth-place finish at the meet and ranks as the 14th-best mark among Division III athletes this season.

This was the first career UAA Track & Field Athlete of the Week honor for Leonard, who had previously claimed the honor twice as a member of the Emory women's soccer team.

Francis matched his own personal-best mark in the long jump, reaching 7.10 meters in the event, tied for the seventh-best mark in the program's history, the 24th-best mark in Division III, and the best mark by a University Athletic Association (UAA) competitor this season.  He finished 12th in the long jump at the meet.

This is the fifth time this season and sixth time over his career that Francis, the 2012 UAA Most Valuable Performer in Field Events, has been named the conference Athlete of the Week.

Emory will be back in action with a pair of meets this week, traveling to Naperville, IL for the Dr. Keeler Invitational on Thursday, and to Clemson, SC for the Tiger Qualifier on Friday and Saturday.
