Emory Men & Women Finish Second at CrossPlex Invitational

The Emory University men's and women's track and field teams combined for season-best marks in 19 different events at the Emory CrossPlex Invitational on Monday, as each squad recorded a second-place finish at the meet in Birmingham, Alabama.

Playing host for an indoor track and field meet for the first time in recent history, the Emory women scored 90 points to finish behind only Shorter College (114 points), while the men notched 95 points to fall just shy of Alabama-Huntsville's 97.  A total of 14 men's squads and 15 women's teams participated in Monday's meet at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

During the men's portion of the meet, Emory athletes recorded the squad's best marks of the season in nine different events during the meet on Monday, including a pair from freshman Maxwell Hoberman.  Hoberman finished fifth in the long jump with a leap of 6.28 meters, the second-best in the University Athletic Association (UAA) this year, and ninth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.11 seconds, fifth among UAA competitors in 2013.  He was also the Eagles' top finisher in the triple jump with a distance of 13.42 meters.

Freshman Adam Rabushka added a time of 8.96 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, good for a third-place finish at the meet and the best time this year by an Eagle and third among all UAA athletes.  Additional season-best times for the Emory men in individual events came from sophomore Tyler Cooke in the mile run (12th-place, 4:32.84), sophomore Kevin Delaney in the 800-meter run (third-place, 1:57.68), freshman Taylor Jarl in the shot put (third-place, 12.12 meters), freshman Young Jin Kim in the pole vault (fourth place, 4.10 meters), and senior Stephen Ellwood in the 'B' section of the 3,000-meter run (first-place, 9:11.43).

The Eagles also received a season-best time from their distance medley relay team of junior Hank Ashforth, sophomore Patrick Crews, junior Alex Fleischhacker and freshman Andrew Hemingway, who finished fourth with a time of 10:51.06, the second-best mark in the UAA this season.

Other top finishes by Eagles at the Crossplex on Monday came from junior Samuel Jean-Baptiste in the 60-meter dash (23rd place, 7.42 seconds), Jarl in the weight throw (third-place, 11.39 meters), sophomore Cameron Wheeler in the 5,000-meter run (fifth-place, 16:14.22) and junior Brandon Bassell in the high jump (third-place, 1.83 meters).

The Emory women followed suit with a number of strong performances of their own.  Senior Kaele Leonard bettered her season-best time in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.83 seconds (good for a fifth-place finish), the fourth-fastest time in Emory history, which also converts to the seventh-best mark among Division III runners this season, and best in the UAA.   Leonard also finished 12th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.20 seconds.

Junior Morgan Monroe claimed third-place in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles after running a time of 9.13 in the preliminaries, the best mark in the UAA this season and 11th among all D-III competitors this season.  Meanwhile, sophomore Debora Adjibaba added a pair of top Emory finishes in the short sprints, claiming eighth-place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.89 seconds (the best time in the UAA this season and fifth-best in the program's history) and a third-place finish in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.80 seconds, her second-best mark of the season.

In the 800-meter run, sophomore Stephanie Crane finished second with a time of 2:15.49, the second-fastest time in Emory history, and the 17th-best converted time among Division III competitors in 2013.
