Mulder Sets 3K Record; Long Sprinters Excel at Tiger Paw Invite

Emory University wrapped up competition at the Tiger Paw Invitational in Clemson, South Carolina on Saturday, as junior Edward Mulder set a school record in the 3,000-meter run, and the Eagles' long sprinters took center stage with a number of top performances at the meet.

Mulder recorded a time of 8:37.77 in the event, breaking the previous school record of 8:38.12, set by Paul Winterhalter in 2010.  In addition, the time was the fastest by a University Athletic Association (UAA) competitor this season.  Mulder finished fifth overall in the event at the meet.

Both senior Kaele Leonard and sophomore Debora Adjibaba recorded top times in the women's 400-meter dash.  Leonard finished sixth overall the meet with a time of 57.66 seconds, the third-fastest mark both by a Division III runner this season, and in the program's history.  Adjibaba followed shortly behind, placing 10th with a time of 58.33 seconds, the ninth-fastest mark in Division III this year, and the 10th-best in school history. 

Leonard and Adjibaba also comprised a half of the Eagles' 4x400-meter relay team, which recorded a time of 3:57.11, the sixth-fastest mark in Division III this season.  Along with sophomore Electra Korn and freshman Alexandra Aiello, the group finished fifth at the meet, and the time ranked as the fourth-fastest in Emory history.

For the men, freshman Adam Rabushka led the way in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.25 seconds, finishing 39th overall.  His time was the second-best by an Emory runner this year, and the third-fastest in the UAA.  Rabushka later teamed with sophomore Patrick Crews, junior Mike Moserowitz and freshman Joel Steinberg to finish 21st in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:29.49, the second-fastest in the UAA this year.

Junior Ankush Mohile recorded a new career-best time in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing 15th with a mark of 8.89 seconds, the fourth-best time in the UAA this year and the best by an Eagle.  In the 800-meter run, Crews notched a season-best time of 1:57.90 (the fourth-best in the UAA), good for a sixth-place finish.  Freshman Maxwell Hoberman was Emory's top finisher in two events on Saturday, claiming a 37th-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.32 (seventh among all UAA competitors this year), and placing 20th in the triple jump with a leap of 13.41 meters.

Junior Alex Fleischhacker was the Eagles' top finisher in the mile with a career-best time of 4:26.74.  Other top performers for the Emory men on Saturday included junior Samuel Jean-Baptiste in the 60-meter dash (48th place, 7.40 seconds) and freshman Jacob Seigel in the shot put (28th-place, 11.08 meters).

Sophomore Hannah Moriarty finished 16th in the 3,000-meter run, the second-fastest raw time by an Emory woman this season, and the ninth-best mark by a UAA runner.  Also in Saturday's distance events, sophomore Stephanie Crane finished 12th in the mile run with a time of 5:07.96.

In Saturday's other running events, junior Pollara Cobb was the Eagles' top finisher in the 60-meter dash, placing 54th with a time of 8.36 seconds, while Aiello was the best Emory runner in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 27.36, good for a 49th-place finish.  Junior Emily Caesar took 30th place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:26.80, while sophomore Hannah Parra was 29th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.17 seconds. 

Freshman Janay Harris led the Eagles in the field events on Saturday, placing 29th in the shot put with a throw of 10.16 meters.

For the women on the first day, junior Meredith Lorch recorded a career-best time in the indoor 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:09.03 and a 10th-place finish.  In the high jump, both sophomore  Katie Wilson and junior Melissa Notis finished 19th after clearing the bar at a height of 1.50 meters.  The men were led on the first day by sophomore Tyler Cooke, who finished 11th in the 5,000-meter run with a season-best time of 15:48.96.  Other top performers for the Emory men on the first day included freshman Paul Nguyen in the long jump (36th place, 5.53 meters), sophomore James Bassen in the weight throw (30th place, 11.99 meters) and junior Brandon Bassell in the high jump (19th place, 1.80 meters).

The Eagles will split the squad next weekend, competing at the JDL Fast Track and at the University of the South on Saturday, February 16th.  They will be the Eagles' final meets before the 2013 University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Track and Field Championships.
