Ford Sets Two Records at Samford Multi

Emory University senior Theresa Ford set school records in the high jump and in overall indoor pentathlon score during the Samford Multi and Invitational at the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Alabama on Friday.

Ford was the top Division III finisher at the meet in the pentathlon with a score of 3,187 points, besting the previous school record of 3,021 points set by former Eagle Katie Sheehan in 2009.  The mark was good for a fourth-place finish, and was the 11th-best in Division III this season.

Ford's best event was the high jump, where she cleared the bar at 1.68 meters, matching her own indoor school record, set twice last season.  The jump was good enough for a first-place finish, and 830 points.  In addition, Ford now ranks fifth in Division III in the high jump this season, and is tops among all University Athletic Association (UAA) competitors.

She added a third-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 5.30 meters to score an additional 643 points, and a career-best time of 9.79 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, good for 12th-place and 752 points.  Rounding out the pentathlon, Ford registered career-bests in both the shot put and the 800-meter run, finishing ninth in the former with a throw of 9.30 meters (484 points) and 16th in the latter with a time of 2:48.62 (478 points).

Emory also had a contingent of athletes in action during the first day of the Tiger Paw Invitational at Clemson University on Friday night.  For the women, junior Meredith Lorch recorded a career-best time in the indoor 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:09.03 and a 10th-place finish.  In the high jump, both sophomore  Katie Wilson and junior Melissa Notis finished 19th after clearing the bar at a height of 1.50 meters.  The men were led on the first day by sophomore Tyler Cooke, who finished 11th in the 5,000-meter run with a season-best time of 15:48.96.  Other top performers for the Emory men on the first day included freshman Paul Nguyen in the long jump (36th place, 5.53 meters), sophomore James Bassen in the weight throw (30th place, 11.99 meters) and junior Brandon Bassell in the high jump (19th place, 1.80 meters).

The Eagles will continue competition at the Tiger Paw Invitational on Saturday.
