Eagles Perform Well in Final UAA Tune-Ups

Eagles Perform Well in Final UAA Tune-Ups

With a smaller squad split between a pair of meets on Saturday, a number of the members of the Emory University track and field teams bested their season-best marks with just one week remaining before the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships.

Emory had four athletes in action at the DePauw Classic on Saturday.  Sophomore Tamara Surtees won the 3,000-meter run with a career-best time of 10:37.96, the best mark by an Eagle this season and 14th in the University Athletic Association (UAA).  Senior Calley Edwards finished second in the mile run with a time of 5:16.58, her season-best mark and 13th among UAA runners.  In the women's 800-meter run, freshman Julie Williamson finished fifth with a time of 2:22.72.

For the men, junior William Matheson placed fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:02.00.  Despite sending a limited squad, Emory finished 10th out of 12 teams in the men's standings with four points, while the women placed seventh out of 12 teams with 22 points.

At the Sewanee Indoor Invitational, senior Theresa Ford led the way with another strong set of performances, winning the long jump with a season-best distance of 5.38 meters (second in the UAA this season) and the high jump by clearing a height of 1.55 meters.  Ford also finished third in the finals of the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.69 seconds, the third-best among UAA competitors this season.

Junior Morgan Monroe claimed second in the finals of the 55-meter hurdles after running a time of 8.52 seconds in the preliminaries, while junior Pollara Cobb was Emory's top finisher in the 55-meter dash, claiming third-place after running a preliminary time of 7.65 seconds, 11th-best in the UAA.

Freshman Janay Harris was the Emory women's top performer in both throwing events, finishing fifth in the weight throw with a season-best distance of 11.52 meters (10th in the UAA) and fourth in the shot put with a toss of 10.38 meters.  Other top performance for the Emory women in Sewanee included sophomore Hannah Parra in the 200-meter dash (fifth place, 28.87 seconds), freshman Alyssa McCready in the 400-meter dash (second place, 1:04.07), junior Khadijah Ameen in the triple jump (second place, 9.40 meters) and both sophomore Elaina Kim and freshman Alexandra Aiello in the pole vault (tied for second place, 2.90 meters).

For the Emory men at Sewanee, junior Samuel Jean-Baptiste recorded a season-best time in the 55-meter dash, winning the finals of the event with a mark of 6.65 seconds, the fifth-best time in the UAA this season.  In the pole vault, freshman Young Jin Kim cleared the bar at a season-best height of 4.11 meters, good for the 12th-best mark in the UAA and a second-place finish.  Sophomore James Bassen claimed third in the weight throw with a season-best toss of 12.44 meters, ranking 11th among UAA competitors.

Adding an event victory for the Emory men was junior Brandon Bassell, who won the high jump with a height of 1.90 meters.  Other top performers for Emory included sophomore Louis Mennel in the 200-meter dash (13th place, 25.68 seconds), junior Nick Cortellessa in the 400-meter dash (seventh place, 55.95 seconds), freshman Paul Nguyen in the long jump (third place, 5.80 meters) and freshman Taylor Jarl in the shot put (fourth place, 11.78 meters).

The Eagles will now turn their attention towards next weekend's UAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday, February 23rd and Sunday, February 24th.
