Emory Claims Two Conference Titles on Day 1 of UAAs

Emory University senior Theresa Ford and junior Mike Moserowitz each claimed the conference championship in the long jump, and three other Eagles earned all-conference recognition, during the first day of competition at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Track and Field Championships in Cleveland, Ohio.

After one day, both the Emory men and women sat in third place.  The men scored 26 points, and trail first-place Carnegie Mellon (44), and second-place Case Western Reserve (34).  The women scored 21 points, and currently sit behind Washington University (49) and Chicago (21).

Ford won the long jump with a distance of 5.76 meters, a new conference and school record, and the fourth-best mark by an NCAA Division III competitor this season.  Ford also qualified for the finals of the 55-meter hurdles, finishing third in the preliminaries on Saturday with a time of 8.59 seconds.

Meanwhile, Moserowitz claimed the UAA in the long jump with a leap of 6.54 meters.  Freshman Maxwell Hoberman also earned UAA honors in the event, finishing third with a jump of 6.36 meters.

Also earning all-UAA honors on Saturday were sophomore Elaina Kim and junior Brandon Bassell.  Kim finished second in the pole vault by clearing a height of 3.36 meters, while Bassell cleared the bar in the high jump at 1.89 meters to finish second overall in the event.

Other scorers on the first day for Emory included freshman Alexandra Aiello in the pole vault (sixth place, 3.06 meters), the Eagles' men's distance medley relay team of Alex Fleischhacker, Moserowitz, William Matheson and Stephen Ellwood (fifth place, 10:30.27) and the women's distance medley relay team of Calley Edwards, Alyssa McCready, Julie Williamson and Marissa Gogniat (fifth place, 12:32.22).

Emory had a number of finals qualifiers in the first-day preliminaries.  Junior Morgan Monroe set a conference record in the 55-meter hurdles, finishing first in the preliminaries with a time of 8.39 seconds.  In the women's 55-meter dash, Emory had three qualifiers, with sophomore Debora Adjibaba finishing  first in the preliminaries (7.26 seconds), followed by Monroe in fourth (7.39 seconds) and junior Pollara Cobb in seventh (7.53 seconds).  Adjibaba also qualified for the finals of the 200-meter dash, finishing second with a time of 26.26 seconds, while senior Kaele Leonard qualified with a third-place finish (26.51 seconds).

The Emory women had three qualifiers in the 400-meter dash, with Leonard winning the event with a time of 58.09 seconds, while Aiello claimed third (59.90) and sophomore Electra Korn fourth (1:00.11).  Sophomore Stephanie Crane qualified for the finals of the 800-meter run, winning the prelims with a time of 2:15.27.

The Emory men had a pair of finals qualifiers in the sprint events, with junior Samuel Jean-Baptiste finished eighth in the preliminaries of the 55-meter dash (6.69 seconds) and freshman Adam Rabushka finishing second in the 400-meter dash preliminaries (50.91 seconds).  Rabushka also qualified for the finals of the 55-meter hurdles (fifth place, 8.39 seconds), along with Ankush Mohile (fourth place, 8.37 seconds).

Rounding out Emory's list of day one qualifiers were Kevin Delaney (fifth place, 1:57.30) and Patrick Crews (sixth place, 1:57.38) in the 800-meter run.

The Eagles will wrap up competition at the 2013 UAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday, with field events beginning at 9:00 AM and the track events starting at noon.  The meet is scheduled to finish by 2:30 PM on Sunday.
