The Emory University Women's Track and Field team opened its 2013 outdoor season on a strong note, finishing first out of 19 teams at the Emory Invitational on Friday and Saturday.  The men's squad chipped in with a bevy of strong performances, finishing sixth out of 19 teams at the meet.

Emory's women totaled 165 points during the two days of competition, finishing well ahead of second-place Hope College, which registered 86.5 points.  Columbus State University finished in third with 68 points.

Meanwhile, Emory's men scored a total of 57 points during the meet.  Marian University (Ind.) won the men's portion of the meet with 97 points scored, while Hope finished second (94 points) and Buffalo State third (94 points).

The Emory women registered nine first-place finishes during the meet.  In the women's 400-meter dash, the Eagles recorded the top-three spots in the standings, led by senior Kaele Leonard's event-winning time of 56.62 seconds, the third-best time in school history.  Sophomore Electra Korn followed in second (58.53 seconds), while freshman Alexandra Aiello claimed third (59.47 seconds).  In the 4x400-meter relay, Leonard, Korn, and Aiello teamed with sophomore Debora Adjibaba to win the race with a time of 3:54.00, the eighth-fastest mark in school history.

Sophomore Stephanie Crane added a win in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:16.20, while Adjibaba finished third with a mark of 2:20.90.  Other first-place finishes in track events came from junior Morgan Monroe, who won the 100-meter hurdles after running a time of 14.95 seconds in the preliminaries, junior Meredith Lorch in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:31.18), and the Eagles' 4x800-meter relay team of sophomore Marissa Gogniat, freshman Julie Williamson, senior Calley Edwards and Crane, which won the event with a time of 9:25.98, the fourth-fastest in school history.

Senior Theresa Ford added a pair of first-place finishes in field events, winning the long jump with a distance of 5.47 meters, and the high jump by clearing the bar at 1.66 meters, tying the third-best mark in school history.  Sophomore Elaina Kim rounded out Emory's top finishers, winning the pole vault by clearing a height of 3.30 meters.

The Emory men received their lone first-place finish from sophomore James Bassen, who won the javelin throw with a distance of 58.11 meters, the fourth-best mark in school history.

Emory registered a runner-up finish in the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 7:55.30.  Adding third-place finishes on the day were junior Alex Fleischhacker (15:19.77 in the 5,000-meter run), sophomore Ankush Mohile (15.86 in the 110-meter hurdles), and freshman Maxwell Hoberman (50.38 seconds in the 400-meter dash).

The Eagles will be back in action next weekend, hosting the Emory Classic on Friday and Saturday, the team's second and final home meet of the season.
