Emory Track & Field Performs Well at Two Weekend Meets

The Emory University Track and Field team turned in a number of solid performances, while in action at two meets over the weekend.

Emory sent a small contingent of distance runners to the Duke Invitational on Friday night.  In the women's 1,500-meter run, sophomore Stephanie Crane led the way with a season-best time of 4:41.09, good for a 19th-place finish.  The Eagles also received a season-best mark from sophomore Tamara Surtees in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:20.76, good for a fifth-place finish in the 'B' section.

For the Emory men at the Duke Invitational, freshman Lukas Mees had the top time in the 5,000-meter run, finishing 11th in the 'C' section with a time of 15:33.46.  In the 3,000-meter run, sophomore Tyler Cooke finished eighth with a time of 9:08.41.

On Saturday, Emory sent a larger group of runners to the Terrier Relays, hosted by Wofford College at Spartanburg High School in Spartanburg, SC.   The Emory women recorded five first-place finishes at the meet, including a pair from senior Theresa Ford, who won both the long jump (5.39 meters) and the high jump (1.62 meters).  Other event winners included senior Kaele Leonard in the 400-meter dash (56.70 seconds), junior Morgan Monroe in the 100-meter hurdles (14.88 seconds), and the Eagles' 4x100-meter relay team of junior Pollara Cobb, Leonard, Monroe and Debora Adjibaba (48.37 seconds).

Adjibaba added a pair of runner-up finishes, placing second in both the 100-meter dash (12.30 seconds) and 200-meter dash (25.06 seconds).  Sophomore Elaina Kim finished third matched her season-best height in the pole vault (3.35 meters), while freshman Janay Harris recorded a season-best mark in the shot put (10.16 meters, 12th-place).

For the men, Emory freshman Jacob Seigel finished seventh in the discus throw with a season-best mark of 44.02 meters, tied for the seventh-best throw in the event in the program's history.  Seigel was also Emory's top performer in the shot put with a toss of 12.18 meters, good for a 16th-place finish.

In the high jump, junior Brandon Bassell finished ninth after clearing the bar at a season-best height of 1.95 meters.  In the 100-meter dash, junior Samuel Jean-Baptiste finished in a time of 11.38 seconds, also a season-best by an Eagle and good for an 18th-place finish.

Emory also performed well in a pair of rarely-run relays, with sophomore Evan Rhea, senior Pat Lanter, freshman Paul Nguyen and senior Isaac Chambers finishing fourth in the sprint medley relay (3:36.65), and Jean-Baptiste, junior Mike Moserowitz, freshman Spencer Koh and freshman Joel Steinberg finishing seventh in the 4x200-meter relay (1:32.36).

Emory will be back in action at the Sea Ray Relays, the Furman Blue Shoes Invitational and the JSCU Invitational next week.
