Eagles Record 14 Season-Best Marks at Two Weekend Track and Field Meets

Emory University athletes recorded 14 season-best marks, including a school-record setting performance from Debora Adjibaba in the 200-meter dash, while in action at the Furman Blue Shoes Invitational and the Johnson C. Smith University Invitational on Saturday.

At the Furman Blue Shoes Invitational, Adjibaba broke her own school record in the event, finishing fourth with a time of 24.64 seconds, the third-fastest time in Division III this season.  In addition, senior Kaele Leonard finished fifth in a mark of 25.39 seconds, the 18th-best mark in Division III, and third among University Athletic Association (UAA) competitors.  Leonard also won the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.71 seconds, while Adjibaba placed third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.26 seconds.

Adjibaba and Leonard joined juniors Pollara Cobb and Morgan Monroe on the Eagles' 4x100-meter relay team, which finished second with a time of 47.68 seconds, the third-fastest by a Division III relay this year.  Monroe also won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.79 seconds, the second-fastest in the UAA and 14th-best in Division III in 2013.

Sophomore Electra Korn finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a career-best time of 1:05.26, ranking second this season among all UAA competitors.  Sophomore Stephanie Crane added a first-place finish in the 1,500-meter run (4:41.90) and a second-place finish in the 800-meter run (2:24.21).

In the field events, freshman Janay Harris paced the Eagles in three events, including a season-best throw of 10.44 meters in the shot put (seventh-best in the UAA), finishing second overall.  Harris also finished second in the hammer throw (28.57 meters) and seventh in the discus throw (22.50 meters).  Sophomore Anja Matthes finished fourth in the high jump (1.55 meters) and sixth in the long jump (4.79 meters), while junior Khadijah Ameen claimed sixth in the triple jump (10.20 meters), and junior Hope Olszewski second in the javelin throw (31.69 meters).

For the men at Furman, freshman Adam Rabushka recorded the top time by a UAA competitor in the 400-meter hurdles this season, placing third at the meet with a time of 55.85 seconds.  In the 400-meter dash, freshman Maxwell Hoberman finished third with a time of 50.26 seconds, the sixth-best in the UAA this year, while senior Isaac Chambers finished sixth with a time of 50.53 seconds, seventh in the UAA this year.

Emory's sprinters also had two of the team's top relay performances of the year.  The Eagles' 4x400-meter relay team of Chambers, Hoberman, junior Mike Moserowitz and freshman Joel Steinberg finished second in a time of 3:24.05, which ranks third in the UAA.  In the 4x100-meter relay, junior Samuel Jean-Baptiste, Moserowitz, freshman Spencer Koh and freshman Paul Nguyen finished fifth with a time of 43.74 seconds, also third in the UAA this year.

Adding a first-place finishes were sophomore Ankush Mohile in the 110-meter hurdles (15.81 seconds) and sophomore James Bassen in the javelin throw (49.02 meters).  Junior Brandon Bassell added a second-place finish in the high jump (1.85 meters), while Jean-Baptiste in the 100-meter dash (10th place, 11.37 seconds) and junior William Matheson in the 800-meter run (seventh-place, 1:56.32) each had season-best times by an Eagle.

With just four athletes in action at the Johnson C. Smith University Invitational in Charlotte, North Carolina, sophomore Tyler Cooke led the way with a third-place finish in the steeplechase with a time of 10:39.22.  Other Emory performances included sophomore Louis Mennel's second-place finish in the pole vault (3.95 meters), sophomore Hannah Smith's second-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:42.59), and freshman Felicia Lombardi's fifth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:38.06).

The Eagles are currently scheduled to take part in a pair of meets next weekend, the Auburn War Eagle Invitational and the Mt. Laurel Invitational, the team's final tune-ups before the 2013 UAA Championships.
