Eagles Improve on Qualifying Times at Gregory Invitational

With one last chance to improve on qualifying times for next weekend's NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships, the Emory University Track and Field team took part in the Gregory Invitational in Naperville, Illinois on Friday, recording five season-best times at the meet.

The Emory women were able to better their national qualifying time in the 4x400-meter relay, as sophomore Debora Adjibaba, sophomore Electra Korn, freshman Julie Williamson and senior Kaele Leonard finished second in a season-best time of 3:49.48, the fourth-fastest mark in school history.  The time  ranked seventh among NCAA Division III schools this season.

Emory also claimed the top two spots in the individual 400-meter dash.  Leonard won the event with a time of 56.68 seconds, while Korn finished second with a career-best mark of 57.27 seconds.

Adding another career-best time for the Emory women was sophomore Stephanie Crane, who finished sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:14.66, the sixth-fastest time in school history.

The Eagles' 4x100-meter relay of junior Pollara Cobb, Leonard, junior Morgan Monroe and Adjibaba finished second in the event with a time of 48.05 seconds.  Individually, Adjibaba claimed fourth in the 100-meter dash, running a preliminary time of 12.42 seconds, while Cobb finished 13th in the event with a time of 13.07, and Monroe claimed a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.80 seconds.

Other strong performances for the Emory women came from senior Theresa Ford in the high jump (t-2nd, 1.63m) and 100-meter hurdles (11th, 15.51 seconds) and junior Meredith Lorch in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (7th, 11:17.30).

Leading the way for the men was junior William Matheson, who recorded a career-best time of 1:55.61 in the 800-meter run, finishing 22nd overall.  Competing in his final meet for Emory, senior Stephen Ellwood notched a season-best time in the 1,500-meter run with a mark of 3:56.24, finishing sixth in the event.  Freshman Adam Rabushka rounded out the list of competitors for the men, claiming 12th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.35 seconds.

With the final day to qualify for the NCAA Championships in LaCrosse, Wisconsin now passed a number of Emory athletes appear to be in range of qualification for the meet, to be held on May 23rd – 25th.  With the top 20 men, 22 women and 16 relays in each event qualifying, currently Adjibaba (20th in the 100m Dash, 12th in the 200m Dash), Leonard (16th in the 400m Run), Monroe (16th in the 100m Hurdles), Ford (tied for seventh in the high jump, 14th in the long jump, and fourth in the heptathlon) and the Eagles' women's 4x100m Relay (12th) and 4x400m Relay (7th) appear to have earned a spot in the Championship meet.  In addition, with her performance on Friday, Korn ranks 28th in the 400m Dash, and could qualify if enough athletes scratch in front of her.
