Eagles Open 2014 on Positive Note at Niswonger Invitational

The Emory University Track and Field team kicked off the 2014 portion of its indoor schedule with a number of solid performances at the Niswonger Invitational on Friday and Saturday at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Although the majority of Emory athletes in action on Friday were sprinters and field event participants, one of the biggest highlights of the day belonged to senior distance runner Edward Mulder, who finished second in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:02.41, just three-tenths of a second off his indoor personal record and good for the seventh-best mark in Division III to start the weekend.  Sophomore Maxwell Hoberman paced the Eagles in a pair of events, finishing 13th in the triple jump with a mark of 13.35 meters and 25th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.93 seconds.  Other top performers for the Emory men on Friday included junior Ankush Mohile in the 60-meter hurdles (16th, 8.95 seconds), sophomore Adam Rabushka in the 400-meter dash (18th, 51.31 seconds) and freshman Dennis Kamara in the 60-meter dash (7.19 seconds).

For the Emory women, junior Electra Korn finished eighth in the 400-meter dash with a career-best mark of 58.07 seconds, the second-fastest mark in Division III this season and the ninth fastest ever by an Eagle.  Junior Debora Adjibaba also registered a personal record in the event, finishing ninth with a time of 58.23 seconds, ranking fifth in Division III this season entering the weekend.

The pair would also lead the Eagles in the 200-meter dash, with Adjibaba claiming 14th-place in the event with a time of 25.63 seconds, ranking third among Division III athletes entering the weekend, while Korn claimed 34th with a time of 26.24 seconds.  Senior Morgan Monroe was Emory's top finisher in both the 60-meter hurdles (eighth, 9.27 seconds) and 60-meter dash (43rd, 8.31 seconds).

In Friday's field events, junior Ulrica Tull bested her own person record in the weight throw by nearly two meters, finishing 23rd with a toss of 12.85 meters, while junior Josephine Akinwumiju paced the Eagles in the shot put, finishing 25th with a distance of 10.36 meters.  In the vertical jumps, junior Elaina Kim finished 14th in the pole vault, registering a height of 3.20 meters, while junior Katie Wilson finished 13th in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.58 meters.

On Saturday for the Emory women, junior Stephanie Crane was the Eagles' top performer in a pair of events, finishing second in the mile run with a time of 5:17.61 and fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:23.19.  Other top distance performers for the women on Saturday included freshman Mackenzie Levy in the 5,000-meter run (18th, 20:42.00) and junior Marissa Gogniat in the 3,000-meter run (third, 10:52.32).

A pair of Emory men registered indoor personal records during the second day of competition at the Niswonger Invitational.  Senior Brandon Bassell finished eighth in the high jump, clearing the bar at a career-best height of 1.93 meter, while sophomore Jacob Seigel claimed 14th in the shot put with a personal record toss of 12.69 meters.

Other day two leaders for the Emory men included junior Kevin Delaney in the 800-meter run (second-place, 1:58.73), sophomore Andrew Drumm in the 5,000-meter run (eighth-place, 16:29.99) and freshman Jake Schlessinger in the mile run (24th place, 4:44.76).
