Korn Sets 400m Hurdles Record at Blue Shoes Meet

Emory University senior Electra Korn turned in a career performance on Saturday at the Blue Shoes Collegiate Track and Field Meet, hosted by Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, smashing the school record in the 400-meter hurdles.

Korn became the first woman in the program's history to break the 62-second mark in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing second overall in the event at the meet with a time of 1:01.94.  The time bested the previous school record of 1:02.23, set by Kahlilah Jennings at the 1997 NCAA Championships, and ranks as the third-fastest time in Division III this season in the event.

Korn also finished second in the 200-meter dash with a career-best time of 25.01 seconds, the ninth-fastest mark by a Division III competitor this season, and teamed with freshman Harley Barrera, senior Morgan Monroe and junior Debora Adjibaba to win the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 48.99 seconds.

Monroe added her season-best time in the 100-meter hurdles, with a mark of 14.41 seconds in the preliminaries of the event.  The time is the fifth fastest in school history and the third-best in Division III in 2014.  Monroe later finished second in the finals of the event with a time of 14.50 seconds.

Senior Meredith Lorch added an event victory in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a season-best time of 11:23.52, ranking 20th among D-III athletes this year.  Other top performances by Emory women on Saturday came from Adjibaba in the 100-meter dash (third, 12.18 seconds in the preliminaries), sophomore Julie Williamson in the 800-meter run (second, 2:17.92), junior Stephanie Crane in the mile run (second, 5:02.84), junior Tamara Surtees in the 5,000-meter run (fifth, 18:10.81), junior Josephine Akinwumiju in the discus throw (12th, 27.38 meters) and shot put (ninth, 10.33 meters), junior Pollara Cobb in the triple jump (seventh, 10.36 meters), senior Hope Olszewski in the javelin throw (second, 33.31 meters) and junior Ulrica Tull in the hammer throw (ninth, 34.19 meters).

Leading the way for the Emory men was junior Gui Silva, who turned in a pair of personal-best times.  Silva won the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.29 seconds, the ninth-fastest time by a Division III competitor this year.  He also was the runner-up in the 200-meter dash with a career-best time of 21.89 seconds.

Junior James Bassen recorded the season-best distance by an Eagle in the javelin throw, registering a mark of 54.28 meters to finish second, while also claiming third in the hammer throw with a mark of 36.70 meters.  Other top performers for the Emory men included senior Samuel Jean-Baptiste in the 100-meter dash (fifth, 11.25 seconds), junior Patrick Crews in the 800-meter run (fourth, 1:56.81), junior Matthew Dry in the 400-meter hurdles (seventh, 1:00.30), freshman Christian Johnson in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (fourth, 9:52.20), freshman Michael McBane in the mile run (ninth, 4:24.20), freshman Austin Hunt in the 5,000-meter run (11th, 15:36.73), freshman Kyle Veator in the long jump (10th, 5.40 meters) and sophomore Dametris Osbourne in the high jump (third, 1.79 meters).
