Moserowitz & Tull Claim UAA Titles during Day 1 of Outdoor Championships

Emory University senior Mike Moserowitz finished first in the long jump, and junior Ulrica Tull claimed her first career conference title in the hammer throw, pacing the Eagles during the first day of competition at the 2014 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships in Chicago, Illinois, hosted by the University of Chicago.

Emory athletes totaled four all-UAA (top-three) finishes, and 12 scoring performances (top-eight finishes) on Saturday.  The Emory men earned an additional seven spots in the finals of events on Sunday, while the women claimed 15 finals spots, based on their performances in preliminary events on Saturday.

After one day, the Emory women are in third place out of the seven teams competing at the meet with 37 points, trailing first-place Chicago (78 points) and second-place Washington University (67.50 points).  The Emory men sit in sixth place with 27 points, as Carnegie Mellon (69 points), Washington (62 points) and Chicago (47.50 points) top the standings.

Moserowitz won the long jump with a leap of 6.75 meters, marking his first-career outdoor title in the event, and his second outdoor championship overall.  Sophomore Maxwell Hoberman added a scoring performance in the event, placing fourth with a leap of 6.64 meters.

Other Emory men to finish in the top-eight in the finals of their events on Saturday and contribute to the team's  point total included freshman Christian Johnson in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (fourth, 9:36.54), sophomore Jacob Seigel in the shot put (eighth, 12.69 meters), sophomore Taylor Jarl in the hammer throw (eighth, 39.72 meters) and the 4x800-meter relay team of senior Eric Weiner, senior William Matheson, junior Kevin Delaney and freshman Walker Marsh (fourth, 8:01.13).

For the women, Tull became the first Emory woman to win the hammer throw since Danielle LeSure in 2002, claiming a victory in the event with a career-best mark of 46.14 meters. 

Adding all-UAA finishes on the first day were senior Meredith Lorch, who was the runner-up in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:11.30, and junior Pollara Cobb, who was third in the long jump with a leap of 5.34 meters.  Other scorers for the Eagles on Saturday included sophomore Alexandra Aiello in the long jump (fifth, 5.13 meters), junior Josephine Akinwumiju in the shot put (fourth, 10.24 meters) and the Eagles' 4x800-meter relay team of junior Marissa Gogniat, freshman Alexa Young, junior Hannah Smith and sophomore Julie Williamson (fifth, 9:47.61).

The Emory women put themselves in a position to make a run at the UAA Championships on the second day, based on their preliminary performances on Saturday.  Qualifiers included junior Electra Korn in the 400-meter dash (second, 59.05 seconds), 200-meter dash (second, 25.57 seconds) and 400-meter hurdles (second, 1:05.73), senior Morgan Monroe in the 100-meter hurdles (first, 14.35 seconds), 100-meter dash (fourth, 12.60 seconds), and 200-meter dash (sixth, 25.78 seconds), junior Hannah Parra in the 100-meter hurdles (fifth, 15.88 seconds) and 400-meter hurdles (eighth, 1:08.28), junior Debora Adjibaba in the 100-meter dash (first, 12.25 seconds) and 200-meter dash (third, 25.42 seconds), Cobb (sixth, 12.67 seconds) and freshman Harley Barrera (eighth, 12.81 seconds) in the 100-meter dash, junior Stephanie Crane (second, 2:17.09) and Williamson (sixth, 2:19.64) in the 800-meter run and Smith (fifth, 1:07.31) in the 400-meter hurdles.

Junior Gui Silva qualified for the finals in a pair of events, winning the preliminaries of the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.70 seconds and finishing third in the 200-meter dash preliminaries with a mark of 22.06 seconds.  Junior Zachary Rosenberg will join Silva in the finals of the 400-meter dash after claiming sixth in the preliminaries with a time of 51.60 seconds, while freshman Dennis Kamara earned entry to the finals of the 100-meter dash after finishing fourth in the preliminaries with a mark of 10.99 seconds.  A pair of Eagles qualified for the finals of the 400-meter hurdles, with sophomore Adam Rabushka winning the preliminaries with a time of 55.23 seconds, and junior Ankush Mohile claiming seventh with a mark of 58.35 seconds.  Junior Patrick Crews rounded out Emory's list of qualifiers, placing sixth in the 800-meter run preliminaries with a time of 1:56.10.
