Emory Track & Field Returns Strong at ESTU Invite

Back in action for the first time in 2015, the Emory University Track and Field Team got off to a strong start to the new year, turning in a number of solid performances at the East Tennessee State University Invitational in Johnson City, Tennessee on Friday and Saturday.

The Emory women were particularly strong in the sprints, led by senior Electra Korn.  Korn finished 14th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.25 seconds, the second-fastest mark in school history and fourth-fastest in Division III this season, and added a 16th-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.53 seconds, the eighth-best Division III mark this year.  Freshman Erica Goldman added a 23rd-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.49 seconds, the 20th-best mark by a Division III competitor.

In the mid-distance events, junior Julie Williamson recorded the sixth-fastest 800-meter run time in program history and the ninth-fastest in Division III, finishing fifth in the seeded race of the event with a time of 2:16.22, while senior Stephanie Crane won the unseeded race with a time of 2:20.68, the 20th-best by a Division III athlete this year.  The duo was also strong in the mile run, with Crane winning the unseeded race with a time of 5:18.13, and Williamson placing second with a mark of 5:18.49.

Freshman Daniel Pietsch made his collegiate debut, turning in a pair of strong finishes.  Pietsch claimed sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.80 seconds, the ninth-best Division III time this season, and added a 64th-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.07 seconds.  Freshman Shane Sullivan added a sixth-place finish in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:20.48, 22nd among Division III runners, while freshman Max Brown finished sixth in the unseeded 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.38, and freshman Jordan Flowers finished third in the 3,000-meter run with a mark of 8:59.50.

The Eagles will be back in action next weekend, when the squad hosts the Emory Crossplex Invitational at the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Alabama on Sunday, Janaury 25th.
