Eagle Men Win Emory Classic; Women Finish Second

The Emory University Men's Track and Field Team claimed its second-straight meet victory, winning the Emory Classic at the Woodruff Physical Education Center on Saturday, while the women turned in a second-place finish at the meet.

The Emory men finished first out of 22 scoring teams at the meet, compiling 149 points to outpace second-place Marian (128.50 points) and third-place Taylor (82).  The women collected 112 points, finishing just one point shy of first-place Taylor (113 points), and well out in front of third-place Columbus State (72.5 points).

After collecting four first-place finishes on Friday, the Emory men collected another four on Saturday.   Sophomore Grant Murphy won the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:58.21, the seventh-fastest mark in Division III this season.  In the triple jump, junior Maxwell Hoberman finished first with a jump of 13.45 meters, ninth in Division III in 2015.  Adding first-place finishes on Saturday were junior Spencer Koh in the pole vault (4.21 meters) and freshman Daniel Pietsch in the 400-meter dash (49.50 seconds).

Adding impressive performances on Saturday were freshmen Shane Sullivan and Benjamin Rogin.  Sullivan finished second in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:56.24, the 11th-best in Division III this year, while Rogin was the runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.20 seconds, the eighth-best in Division III. 

The lone first-place finisher for the Emory women on Saturday was senior Marissa Gogniat, who won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:59.91, the 11th-fastest in 2015 by a Division III athlete.  Senior Stephanie Crane added a time of 2:17.31 in the 800-meter run, the seventh-best in Division III this year and good for a third-place finish.  Freshman Erica Goldman claimed a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.21 seconds.

Emory will look to keep its strong start to the season going when the team hits the road for the VertKlasse Meeting, hosted by High Point University in High Point, North Carolina on Friday, April 3rd and Saturday, April 4th.
