Murphy Breaks Emory’s 3K Record at Mt. Laurel Invite

Emory University sophomore Grant Murphy set a new program record in the 3,000-meter run to lead the Eagles' competitors at the Mountain Laurel Invitational at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee on Friday.

Murphy won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:31.29, smashing the previous school record of 8:41.22, set by former Eagle Paul Tufaro in 2004 at the Charlotte Invitational.  Freshman Shane Sullivan added second-place finish in the event with a mark of 8:42.82, the third-fastest 3,000-meter run time in school history.

Senior Kevin Delaney bettered his career-best time in the 800-meter run for the second-straight meet, finishing third with a time of 1:55.98, the best mark in the event this season by an Eagle and the eighth-fastest in the University Athletic Association.  Senior James Bassen added a season-best mark in the hammer throw, finishing third with a distance of 39.29 meters.

Adding first-place finishes for the Emory men were sophomore Ian McIsaac in the 400-meter dash (51.48 seconds), freshman Benjamin Rogin in the 110-meter hurdles (15.48 seconds), junior Adam Rabushka in the 400-meter hurdles (54.32 seconds), junior Spencer Koh in the pole vault (4.25 meters), and freshman Charlie Hu in the triple jump (12.77 meters).

For the Emory women, senior Hannah Smith won the women's 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:20.56, tied for the eighth-fastest mark in school history.  The Eagles' 4x100-meter relay team of freshmen Caitlin Cheeseboro, Julia Leventhal, Erica Goldman and junior Alexandra Aiello finished second and notched the squad's season-best mark in the event with a time of 49.90 seconds, the second-best time in the UAA this year.

Freshman Dara Liss won a pair of events at the meet, finishing first in both the pole vault (2.90 meters) and the triple jump (9.79 meters).  Additional first-place finishes by the Emory women were recorded by senior Hannah Parra in the 400-meter hurdles (1:06.53) and freshman Abigail Hotaling in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:00.28).

Both the Emory men and women finished second in the team standings, with seven total squads scoring in each gender at the meet.  The men scored 166 points during the meet to finish behind only Birmingham-Southern College (167 points), and ahead of third-place Lee University (109) and fourth-place Sewanee (90.5).  Birmingham-Southern also won the women's portion of the meet with 200 points, followed by Emory (155), Lee (121) and Sewanee (62).

Emory also had a small contingent in action at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, Georgia during the weekend.  On Friday, freshman Jordan Flowers placed 25th in the men's 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:00.94, while junior Lukas Mees placed 37th with a mark of 4:05.91.  On Saturday, senior Stephanie Crane claimed 32nd in the women's 800-meter run with a mark of 2:16.36, her best time of the season in the event, and the fifth-best time by a UAA competitor in 2015.
