Bassen, Pietsch, Cheeseboro & Emory Coaching Staff Recognized by the UAA

Emory University senior James Bassen was named the University Athletic Association Most Valuable Performer for Field Events, while freshmen Daniel Pietsch and Caitlin Cheeseboro were selected as the UAA Men's and Women's Rookie of the Year, respectively, following their performances at the 2015 University Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Atlanta, Georgia.

In addition, Emory's coaching staff of Head Coach John Curtin and assistants Aaron Campbell, Lance Harden, MedaLana Smith and Pedro Vazquez were named the Men's Coaching Staff of the Year, after leading the team to its first UAA Outdoor Championship since the 2004 season, and its fifth overall.  It was the fifth time Curtin and his staff has been named the UAA Men's Outdoor Coaching Staff of the Year.

Bassen won the javelin throw at the meet, setting new conference and school records with a distance of 61.87 meters, the sixth-best throw by a Division III competitor this year.  He added all-UAA finishes by placing third in both the discus throw (with a toss of 41.33 meters) and the hammer throw (with a mark of 44.77 meters).  It marked the 13th time an Emory athlete has been named the Most Outstanding Performer at the UAA Outdoor Championships, and the second time an Eagle has won it specifically for his performance in field events (along with Ian Francis in 2012).

Pietsch, who claimed the UAA Rookie of the Year award for the indoor season as well, became the first Emory athlete to be named the conference's Outdoor Rookie of the Year, which was first awarded during the 2001 campaign.  He won the 400-meter dash with a conference-record time of 47.50 seconds, the seventh-fastest in school history and fourth in Division III this year.  Pietsch also scored in the 200-meter dash, placing sixth with a time of 23.10 in the finals (after recording a mark of 22.72 in the preliminaries) and was the anchor leg on a pair of all-UAA relays, finishing second with the 4x100-meter relay team (42.31 seconds) and third with the 4x400-meter relay team (3:21.16).

Cheeseboro scored 11.25 points for the Eagles at the meet, helping the women finish third in the team standings.  She won the UAA Championship in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing first with a time of 14.92 seconds (the 38th-best in Division III this season), setting a personal-best mark in the event by .42 seconds.  She also notched a career-best time in the 100-meter dash, finishing 13th with a time of 12.94 seconds.  Cheeseboro is the third Emory woman to be named the UAA Outdoor Rookie of the Year, along with Alix Dyer in 2009 and Debora Adjibaba in 2012.

Emory will have the week off from competition before returning to action next week, beginning the final stretch of the campaign leading up to the NCAA Division III Championships.
