Seven Eagles Qualify for 2016 NCAA DIII Outdoor Championships

Seven athletes from the Emory University track & field teams, two men and five women, have qualified for the 2016 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships to held from Thursday, May 26th through Saturday, May 28th at Wartburg College in Waverly, IA.

On the men’s side, senior Lukas Mees and sophomore Daniel Pietsch will represent the Eagles in Waverly. Mees qualified in the 3000m Steeplechase after setting the school record at the Dr. Keeler Invitational with a time of 9:03.27. He will enter with the seventh fastest seed time and will be looking to improve on his 17th place finish at last year’s national championships. Pietsch qualified in the 400m Dash after tying his own UAA-record time of 47.50 in a first place finish at the UAA Championships in April. Pietsch enters competition with a the fifth fastest seed time and earned All-America honors with an 8th place finish at the 2015 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships.

For the women, senior Julie Williamson, freshman Ariana Newhouse and sophomore Erica Goldman have qualified in individual events for the Eagles. Williamson, after recording the top three fastest times in the 800m Run her last three times out on the track, will enter nationals with the 16th fastest seed time (2:10.71). Newhouse and Goldman have both qualified in the 400m Dash after the duo finished first and second at the UAA Championships with the two fastest times in school history. Newhouse (55.71) comes in with the 14th fastest seed time with Goldman (55.81) in the 18th position.

Newhouse and Goldman will also be part of Emory’s lone relay team that has qualified for nationals, joining freshman Dilys Osei and sophomore Julia Leventhal in the 4x400m. The quartet owns the 10th fastest seed time at 3:48.71 (third-best mark in school history) which they registered at the Kentucky Relays on May 7th.
