Aiello, Mees, Seigel Earn Conference Titles on Day One of 2016 UAA Outdoor Championships

The Emory University track & field teams saw three athletes crowned conference champions with two other individuals and one relay team earning All-UAA honors on day one of the 2016 UAA Outdoor Championships in St. Louis, Mo.

Following one day of competition, the Eagles on the men side sit in fourth place with 45.50 points while the Emory women's team is in fifth place with 37 points.

Seniors Jacob Seigel, Lukas Mees and Alexandra Aiello led the Eagles on day one as each athlete earned an event title for Emory. Seigel captured the Discus championship for the third straight year with a finals mark 44.24m. He is the only athlete in school history with multiple UAA Championships in the discus. Mees won the 3000m Steeplechase for the second straight year with a winning time of 9:17.90, a new season-best mark for the Marion, IA native. Aiello becomes the fifth-ever outdoor champion in the long jump event as she posted a winning mark of 5.31m. It is the first outdoor All-UAA honor of her career.

The Eagles saw two other individual performers and one relay team earn All-UAA kudos in addition to Seigel, Mees and Aiello on day one. Junior Kyle Veator placed third in the long jump event with a mark of 6.60m and freshman Paris Wagner finished third in the discus at 36.02m. The 4x800m Relay of freshman Kayla O'Shea, sophomore Gabrielle Stravech, junior Alexa Young and freshman Clare Ubersax rounded out the All-UAA performers for Emory on day with a second place showing, finishing with a time of 9:15.56.

In preliminary action, the Eagles saw nine women and six men qualify for the finals which will be held tomorrow. Qualifying for the women were freshman Dilys Osei in the 100m Hurdles (3rd, 14.86) and 400m Hurdles (4th, 1:06.40), freshman Ariana Newhouse in the 400m Dash (1st, 57.07) and 200m Dash (25,18), sophomore Erica Goldman in the 400m Dash (2nd, 57.14) and 200m Dash (7th, 25.84), freshman Dani Bland in the 200m Dash (2nd, 25.15) and 100m Dash (3rd, 12.32), senior Julie Williamson in the 800m Run (4th, 2:14.07), freshman Haley Moyer in the 400m Hurdles (5th, 1:06.67), senior Khadijah Sayyid in the 200m Dash (6th 25.75) and 100m Dash (4th, 12.36) and sophomore Julia Leventhal (5th, 12.36) and Aiello (6th, 12.42) in the 100m Dash.

And for men, qualifying for the finals on day one were sophomore Benjamin Rogin in both the 110m Hurdles (1st, 15.18) and 400m Hurdles (57.02), freshman Noah Elm in the 110m Hurdles (6th, 15.81), sophomore Daniel Pietsch in both the 200m Dash (2nd, 21.63) and 400m Dash (48.51), junior Ian McIsaac in the 400m Dash (4th, 49.70), senior Spencer Koh in the 100m Dash (5th, 11.25) and sophomore Max Brown in the 800m Run (5th, 1:53.36).

The second and final day of the 2016 UAA Outdoor Championships kicks off tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM. Results and meet recap will be posted to emoryathletics.com at the end of competition.
