The Emory women's and men's cross country teams enjoyed a successful start to the 2012 season on Saturday with each squad turning in solid performances at the Sewanee/Berry Invitational.

The Eagle women recorded a second-place finish out of 14 teams, totaling 78 points, second only to Division I member Mississippi State's No. 1 mark of 15 points.  Centre College claimed third place with 98 points while the University of the Cumberlands (121 pts.) and King College (124 pts.) rounded out the top five.  Pacing the team's effort was junior Sarah Klass (Bloomington, IL), who covered the 6K course in a time of 24:16, good for 15^th position in the 138-runner field.  Senior Calley Edwards (Portland, OR) and sophomore Tamara Surtees (Chagrin Falls, OH) crossed the finish line in 18^th and 19^th place, respectively, with Edwards clocking a 24:26 and Surtees a 24:28.  Sophomore Hannah Smith (Pittsfield, MA) came through with an effort 24:32, good for the No. 22 slot, while freshman Aileen Rivell (Colts Neck, NJ) rounded out the team's scorers with a showing a 24:34, 24^th among the contestants.   Other Emory competitors included junior Meredith Lorch (26^th, 24:40),  junior Emily Caesar (28^th, 24:48), sophomore Ashley Stumvoll (30^th, 24:52), sophomore Hannah Moriarty (33^rd, 25:04), sophomore Marissa Gogniat (34^th, 25:05), sophomore Margaret Gregg (56^th, 26:38), freshman Felicia Lombardi (58^th, 26:41), freshman Lydia O'Neal (60^th, 26:46), sophomore Amanda Bastien (27:25) and freshman Julie Williamson (30:57).

The Emory men's side concluded the 8K race with 110 points, registering a fourth-place finish out of 15 teams.   Mississippi State raced to a first-place performance with 36 points with Cumberlands taking home runner-up honors with 95 points.  Bryan College (105 pts.) was third and King College (128 pts.) was fifth.   Junior Eddie Mulder (Pompano Beach, FL) was the team's No. 1 runner and fourth overall out of 134 entries, covering the course in a personal-best time of 26:32.  Freshman Lucas Mees (Marion, IA) made a fine account of himself in his initial college competition, ranking second among the Emory contingent and 14^th in the field with an effort of 27:04.   Junior Alex Fleischhacker (San Diego, CA) finished No. 3 on the squad, 22^nd overall (27:35) while sophomore Cameron Wheeler (St. Petersburg, FL) and junior Hank Ashforth (Whitehouse Station, NJ) accounted for the rest of the team scoring with their respective times of 28:17 and 28:58 good for the 40^th and 51^st positions.  Other Emory representatives included senior Scott Jarvis (52nd, 28:59), sophomore Ryan Callahan (57^th, 29:10), sophomore Brian Diener (59^th, 29:12), junior Santiago Flores-Alvarez (29:30), sophomore Mike Camilleri (30:04), junior Craig Melissas (30:18.5), freshman Josh Traynelis (30:18.9), sophomore Patrick Crews (30:48), junior Ishan Dey (31:04) and sophomore Hirsh Gaikwad (32:14).

Both the men's and women's team resume action next Saturday (Sept. 8) when they compete in the Georgia State Invitational at the Nash Farm Battlefield in Hampton, GA.
