Emory Men's Cross Country Announces 2014 Award Winners

The Emory University men's cross country team has announced the program's award winners for the 2014 season.

Junior Lukas Mees (Marion, IA) was named the Most Valuable Runner for the second time in his career after turning in a solid campaign that saw him rank among the team's top three finishers in all eight competitions.   Mees landed Second Team All-University Athletic Association honors following his team-leading 12th-place performance at the conference championship, and raced his way to all-region honors after finishing in the ninth position out of 201 entries at the NCAA South/Southeast Region Championships.  He was named the UAA Runner of the Week after clocking a personal-best 8K time of 25:38 at the JSU Foothills Invitational that ranked second overall in the field.

Sophomore Grant Murphy (Hillsborough, CA) was tabbed as the Most Improved Runner Award after emerging as a consistent contributor, scoring in every competition. Murphy paced the Emory pack and brought home all-region accolades after crossing the finish line sixth out of 201 runners at the NCAA South/Southeast Championships with a personal-best mark of 25:41.  He was the Eagles' No. 2 runner and ninth out of 62 entries at the Gulf Coast Stampede and was the squad's No. 3 scorer at the UAA Championships.

Senior Tyler Cooke (Atlanta) received the Coaches' Award, symbolic of dedication, leadership and inspiration.  Cooke ranked among the Eagles' top three in six competitions and was their No. 1 finisher at the Oberlin Inter-Regional Rumble.  An all-region performer following a 13th-place finish at the NCAA South/Southeast Championships, Cooke followed that effort by registering a personal-best 8K showing of 25:32 at the NCAA D-III Championships that ranked second among the Emory pack.

Freshman Jordan Flowers (Dunwoody, GA) was chosen as the Most Outstanding Newcomer.  Flowers scored in seven of the team's eight competitions, and was an all-region honoree after finishing 23rd overall at the NCAA South/Southeast Championships.  He ran a season-best 8K time of 26:03 at the UAA Championships and turned in a mark of 26:10 at nationals.
