EMORY SWEEPS MARYVILLE COLLEGE TO OPEN THE SEASON

(Feb. 11) - The Emory Eagles swept a doubleheader against Maryville College (Tenn.), 8-0, 8-0, riding on  five-hit performances by Sarah Morse and Emily Sunshine and shutouts by Kathy Gordon and Lauren Eaves.

Morse went 5 for 7 with a home run and two doubles and five RBI over two games. Sunshine was 5 for 8 with four runs scored.

Gordon had eight strikeouts in the first game, and Eaves allowed just one hit in the second as both games ended in the sixth inning due to the mercy rule.

The Eagles had 13 hits in the first game and took the lead due to good base running to take advantage of Maryville miscues.

The Eagles took the lead early in the first game scoring two in the bottom of the first inning. Sunshine doubled followed by a single by freshman Kim Bandy. Bandy stole second and the two scored on wild pitches by Fighting Scots pitcher Kerri Onks.

The Eagles added another in the third on a leadoff double by Morse followed by an RBI double by catcher Rachel Blume.

In the fourth, the Eagles started to pile it on scoring four. Betsy Bruinsma and Ali Braverman singled to start the inning. Emily Sunshine then beat out a bunt single, and the throw to first got away allowing the runners to advance and Bruinsma to score. Sunshine stole second, and Braverman scored on the throw to second.

The errors ended up costing Maryville nothing as Morse hit a 2-run homer to put the Eagles up 7-0.

The sixth inning resembled the third with Morse getting a leadoff hit and after a double by Amanda Kerns being knocked in by Blume. That gave the Eagles a 8-0 lead to end the game by the mercy rule.

Morse was 3 for 4 with two RBI and three runs while freshman Blume was 2 for 3 with two RBI in her collegiate debut. Sunshine was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and Bruinsma added two hits.

Gordon allowed only three hits and no walks to get her first win of the season.

The second game started more slowly but finished nearly the same with an 8-0 win on 12 hits.

The early story was the pitching of Eaves who retired the first 11 batters, seven of which on infield groundballs. Eaves did not allow a hit until the fifth inning.

The Eagles scored one in the second on a sacrifice fly by Sunshine to plate freshman Amanda Kerns.

In the third the Eagles scored two starting with three consecutive infield hits. Cassi Witcher led off with a bullet at the third baseman which she barely managed to knock down to hold Witcher to a single. Back-to-back bunt singles by Sunshine and Bandy loaded the bases for the Eagles. Morse knocked in one with a sacrifice fly, and Kerns knocked in one with a ground out to second base giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead.

The next two innings were scoreless until a five-run outburst in the sixth sent the teams home early. Five of the first six Emory hitters reached base on four singles leaving two on and giving the eagles a 6-0 lead. Morse capped off the day with a two run double down the left field line to give the Eagles the 8-0 lead.

Eaves gave up only one hit and two walks for the Eagles in the six inning shutout.

Witcher, Sunshine, Bandy, Morse, and Bruinsma each had two hits with Witcher and Sunshine scoring twice each and Morse knocking in three.

The Eagles will next play tomorrow against Georgia Perimeter College. The game was scheduled to be played away but has been moved to Emory due to field conditions at Georgia Perimeter. The doubleheader will begin at 1 pm.
