2007 Athletes Of The Week

(May 21) -- Emory University junior Ali Braverman recorded hits in each of the Eagles' three games at the NCAA Division III Championship.

Braverman registered a .444 batting average (4-of-9) with two home runs, a double, three runs scored and two runs batted in.

After going 1-for-3 in an opening-game setback to eventual champion Linfield College, Braverman picked up two hits, including a homer, in a 12-3 triumph over Moravian College. Ali then accounted for Emory's lone run in a 3-1 loss to UW-Eau Claire with her fourth round tripper of the campaign.

Braverman concluded the year fifth on Emory's seasonal list in both hitting (.466) and doubles (13).


(Apr. 23) -- Emory University sophomore Kim Bandy sparked the Eagles to a pair of wins last week and in the process helped the squad extend its win streak to 14 games.

In 5-2 and 8-0 wins over Piedmont College, the first baseman went six-for-seven at the plate, scored four runs, stole two bases and registered one RBI.

In the opening game, Bandy rapped out four hits in four plate appearances, scored a pair of runs and swiped two bases. In the second contest, she continued her hot hitting, with a pair of safeties in three at-bats while scoring two more runs.

Kim went into the twinbill hitting .392 and raised her average to .423 by the end of the day.

Bandy is No. 3 on the team in hitting and is tied for first place with 31 RBIs.


(Apr. 16) -- Emory University freshman Cassie Walsh helped the Eagles to four wins last week.

Walsh batted an impressive .636 in the four contests, going seven-of-11 from the plate, scored four runs, stole three bases and drove home one run as the Eagles raised their record to 26-6.

In 4-1 and 8-0 wins over Wesleyan College, Walsh posted four hits in six trips to the plate and finished with a pair of stolen bases and one RBI. In 7-2 and 14-4 decisions over LaGrange, the center fielder picked up three hits and scored four runs.

So far this year, Walsh is No. 2 on the team with a .485 batting average and has recorded a team-best 47 hits.


(Apr. 10) -- Emory University junior Ali Braverman compiled a.692 batting average during a 4-0 week for the Eagles, hitting nine-of-13 with six runs batted in and six runs scored.

She finished a combined 7-for-9 with two RBIs in a doubleheader sweep of Wesleyan College then picked up a pair of hits with four RBIs, including a three-run double, in a doubleheader shutout of the University of Dallas.

Through games played Apr. 9, Braverman leads the Eemory squad in hitting with a .487 average. She has also registered a team-high 10 doubles.


(Mar. 26) -- Emory University junior pitcher Ashley Tobar picked up a save and a win on Sunday in helping the Eagles to a doubleheader sweep sweep of LaGrange.

After LaGrange had narrowed an Emory lead to 2-1, Tobar came on in the relief in the bottom of the seventh and inherited runners on second and third with just one out. Tobar got the next two batters to strike out and pop out, ending the uprising.

In the nightcap, Tobar tossed a complete game, allowing four hits and striking out two in a 2-0 victory.


(Mar. 19) -- Emory University freshman outfielder Cassie Walsh enjoyed a fine UAA Tournament and concluded it by leading the Eagles in hitting with a hefty .462 average.  Walsh started all eight contests and collected a team-high 12  hits in 26 trips to the plate. In addition she scored five runs, second on the club.  She had hits in seven games including five multi-hit performances.  She went 3-for-3 with a run scored in a 3-1 win over Case Western Reserve on March 16.

So far this year, she has started 19 of the squad's 20 games and paces the Eagles with a .508 average, racking up a team-high 30 safeties in 59 plate appearances.  She is tied for second with 11 RBIs and has a team-best two triples.


(Mar. 12) -- Emory University freshman designated hitter Caitlin Fitzgerald swung a big bat on Saturday (Mar. 10) in helping the Eagles to a sweep of a doubleheader against Averett University.

In an 8-0 opening-game win, Fitzgerald went two-for-four at the plate with an RBI before registering two hits and three RBIs in a 7-0 triumph in the second game.  Her two-run triple in the third inning gave the Eagles all the offense they would need in that game and she batted in another run the following frame with a single.

So far this season, Caitlin has seen action in seven games and is hitting .500 with six hits in 12 plate appearances.


(Mar. 5) -- Emory junior second baseman Ali Braverman enjoyed a big weekend (Mar. 3-4) in helping the Eagles to three wins in four outings.

Ali hit .643 over the weekend, registering nine hits in 14 trips to the plate, while scoring four runs. Among her nine safeties were three doubles and one triple.

In a 7-3 second-game win over Huntingdon College on Sunday, Braverman went 3-for-4, picking up a double and a three-bagger, and scored a pair of runs. In the first game of that twinbill, she went 3-for-3 and scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning in a 2-1 decision.

So far this season, she is batting .500 with a team-leading 17 hits in 34 at-bats. She leads the club in both doubles (6) and slugging percentage (.735) and has flawlessly handled all 35 of her fielding opportunities.


(Feb. 19) -- Emory junior pitcher Kathy Gordon figured in every decision last week in helping the Eagles to a 3-1 record in its opening four games of play.

Gordon hurled a total of 14 2/3 innings and allowed just two earned runs while striking out  16 and walking two.

In a season-opening 7-2 win over Greensboro College (Feb. 16), Gordon tossed 5 1/3 innings and struck out two while not surrendering any earned runs. 

On Sunday, Gordon notched a pair of wins on the final day of the Emory Invitational, tossing four innings as the starter in a 9-0 triumph over Millsaps College.  She did not allow any runs and whiffed five in a five-inning contest.

In the finale on Sunday, Gordon came on in relief and blanked Piedmont College for 3 1/3 innings. giving up just two hits and striking out three while not allowing any walks.
