The Emory University softball team battled through a pair of rain
delays and got back into the win column at the University Athletic
Association Tournament Thursday afternoon, opening the day with a
win over Case Western. The Eagles raised their overall record
to 9-7 (3-1 UAA) following a five-inning, 8-0 victory over the
Spartans who slipped to 3-5 (0-4 UAA).
Freshman Ellen Kocoloski provided the offensive fireworks for the
Eagles, hitting a pair of home runs en route to a 3-for-3
performance at the plate that included four RBIs. Freshman third
baseman Meaghan Schultz and senior right fielder Jenna Lamoreaux
each knocked in a pair of runs as well.
Freshman pitcher Jamie Melson picked up her second victory at the
UAA Tournament, tossing all five frames and allowing just two
hits.
Emory took a 1-0 lead in its half of the first inning when a
one-out single by Kocoloski scored senior Cassie Walsh. The
Eagles stretched their lead to 3-0 in the third when senior Caitlin
Fitzgerald opened the inning with a single followed by a two-run
homer by Kocoloski. Emory would close out the game in the
fifth by scoring five runs. Kocoloski got things started with
a solo homer, her fourth round tripper of the year, while
Schultz’s two-run double accounted for the game’s final
runs.
Next up for Emory is a Thursday afternoon contest vs. Brandeis.
