Emory Softball Edged By Rochester In UAA Tourney Action

Box

The Emory University softball team closed out the second day of action at the UAA Tournament with a tough loss to Rochester.  The Eagles saw their overall record fall to 8-7 (2-1 UAA) following a 4-3setback to the Yellowjackets who went to 3-2 in overall play (2-1 UAA).  Earlier in the day, Emory topped No. 6-ranked Washington University.

Emory finished the game with 11 hits compared to Rochester’s seven, but the Yellowjackets socked three home runs in ending the Eagles’ five-game winning streak.  Senior Caitlin Fitzgerald keyed the Emory offensive attack, picking up three hits in four trips to the plate and knocking in a pair of runs. Senior Cassie Walsh and freshman Ellen Kocoloski each chipped in a pair of safeties.

Trailing by a 1-0 margin, Emory accounted for all three of its runs in the top of the second inning.  Freshman third baseman Dana Goodenough’s two-bagger scored Kocoloski while a two-out single by Fitzgerald scored Goodenough and junior Nikki Perez.  Rochester tied the affair in its half of the third when sophomore right fielder Kim Grimes homered to center field.  Grimes put the Yellowjackets ahead for good with a solo blast in the fifth inning.  Emory threatened in the top of the sixth when it had runners at second and third with two out, but failed to advance the runners.

After picking up the win in the Wash U. game earlier in the day, sophomore Bridget Holloway was on the receiving end of the loss against Rochester as she tossed 3 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one run and striking out four.

Emory resumes play on Thursday with games against Case Western (10:00 a.m.) and Brandeis (12:30 p.m.).
