The Emory University softball team opened the University
Athletic Association Tournament Championship on a positive note
Tuesday with a win over Brandeis University. The Eagles
captured their fourth straight victory and raised their overall
record to 7-6 (1-0 UAA) with a 3-1 decision over the Judges who
slipped to 2-1 on the year.
Freshman Jamie Melson tossed a masterful complete game en route to
picking up the win for Emory. The lefty surrendered just four
hits and fanned one, while not allowing any base-on-balls, as she
boosted her mark to 2-2.
Emory jumped on the board with two runs in the first as sophomores
Jessica Thomas and Jessica Boni delivered run-producing
singles. The Eagles added their final run in the top of the
second inning when senior Jenna Lamoreaux opened the frame with a
single and eventually scored on a throwing error by the Brandeis
shortstop. Meanwhile, Melson kept Brandeis at a distance
and allowed just one base runner over the last three innings.
Emory resumes play on Wednesday when it takes on No. 6-ranked
Washington University (10:00 am) and the University of Rochester
(12:30 p.m.).
