Emory junior Jessica Thomas hit a two-run homer and the No.
2-ranked Emory softball fought off a late Piedmont College threat
in recording a 5-4 victory and a sweep of a twinbill. The
Eagles won the first game by a 3-0 margin. Emory has won nine
straight games and owns a 36-2-1 overall record. Piedmont
slipped to 22-12.
The blast by Thomas, her team-high 10th round tripper of
the campaign, was the big blow in helping Emory get off to a 3-0
lead in the first inning. The Eagles added single tallies in
the fifth when freshman Megan Light came through with a
run-producing single, and in the sixth when freshman Lauren
Gorodetsky’s single enabled pinch runner Jamie Dodich to
cross the plate. The Lions trailed by a 5-2 margin heading
into their final at bat and scored a pair of runs and had the tying
run on first base before seeing the rally come to an end.
Junior pitcher Bridget Holloway, returning to the mound for the
first time since Mar. 24, picked up the win, her 15th of
the year against just one setback, hurling all seven innings and
allowing seven hits.
Emory returns to action on Saturday (Apr. 23) when it plays a
doubleheader at Maryville College.
