The No. 4-ranked Emory softball team opened the first day of the UAA Tournament on a successful note, posting wins over Brandeis University and the University of Rochester.  The Eagles extended their winning streak to 13 games and boosted their overall record to 19-1 (2-0 UAA) in the process following an 8-0 triumph in five innings against Brandeis followed by a 5-0 decision over Rochester.

In the opener against the Judges of BU, sophomore pitcher Lena Brottman tossed all five innings, allowing just two hits and striking out seven in raising her record to 6-0.   Brottman was the beneficiary of a nine-hit Emory attack that included a two-run homer by sophomore Megan Light that was the big blow in a three-run first inning, and a solo shot by sophomore Sophia Tarte in the bottom of the third that extended the Eagles' lead to 4-0.   Emory closed the game out in the bottom of the fifth by scoring four runs, the first coming when freshman Brooke Healey was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded followed by a bases-loaded walk to Maija Ehlinger that scored Jessica Thomas.  Holding a 6-0 margin, junior pinch hitter Meaghan Schultz delivered a single that scored Healey and pinch runner Jamie Dodich with the final two runs on the contest.

Senior Bridget Holloway drew the starting assignment in the circle against Rochester and upped her season record to 10-1, throwing the first four innings and allowing five hits while striking out one.  Sophomore Amanda Kardys came on in relief and completed the shutout, hurling the final three innings and fanning six while giving up three hits.  The Eagles got on the board with a run in their half of the first when Light singled in the first of her three RBIs in the game.  The scored remained 1-0 until Emory scored three unearned runs in the top of the fifth with Light smacking a two-run homer, her second on the day and sixth of the season.   Emory accounted for its final run in the seventh when a two-out single by Tarte scored Lauren Gorodetsky.

Emory, which has outscored its last three foes by a 21-0 margin, continues the UAA Tournament on Wednesday when it plays Case Western at 10:00 a.m., followed by a 12:30 contest against No. 23-ranked Washington University.
