Emory Softball Pounds Brandeis

Emory Softball Pounds Brandeis

The No. 2-ranked Emory softball team played one game at the University Athletic Association Tournament on Thursday and moved back into first place in the hunt for the conference title after pounding out a win over Brandeis University.  The Eagles boosted their overall record to 21-2, 4-1 in the league, following a 15-0, five-inning decision over the Judges.

Emory rapped out a total of 16 hits against four Brandeis pitchers including three safeties apiece by senior Jessica Boni and sophomore Megan Light.  Boni knocked in seven runs on the day, tying the fourth-highest individual total in school history, and socked a grand slam in the second inning that keyed a five-run outburst.    Sophomore Sophia Tarte came through with her second homer of the season, a two-run shot in the third inning that highlighted a four-run frame.   The Eagles scored all the runs they would need when they crossed the plate four times in the first inning with Light driving in the first two with a single and later scoring following a single by Boni.

Senior pitcher Bridget Holloway posted her 11th win in 12 decisions, tossing three innings of hitless ball and striking out two.  Junior Jamie Melson was in the circle the final two innings and allowed one hit while fanning one batter.

Emory returns to action on Friday when it battles Rochester at 10:00 a.m., before meeting Case Western at 12:30 p.m.
