Emory Softball Sweeps Agnes Scott

Emory Softball Sweeps Agnes Scott

The No. 2-ranked Emory softball team received sterling pitching performances from senior Bridget Holloway and sophomore Lena Brottman Monday evening at Oakhurst Park as the Eagles posted a sweep of a doubleheader against Agnes Scott.  Emory ran its win streak to six games and raised its overall record to 27-3 in the process following 3-0 and 8-0 (6 inn.) verdicts over the Scotties who slipped to 16-12.

Holloway raised her record to 14-1 on the year, tossing all seven innings in the opener and allowing just two hits while striking out eight ASC batters, tying her season high.  It was Holloway's eighth complete game in 15 starting assignments this year.  The game started out as a pitcher's duel between Holloway and her counterpart, Ashley Berger.  Holloway surrendered just one hit through four frames while Berger held the Eagles without a hit.  Emory finally broke through in its half of the fifth when shortstop Dana Goodenough drew a one-out walk.  After stealing second base and advancing to third following a fly out, Goodenough scored when sophomore center fielder Lauren Gorodetsky blistered an offering by Berger into the gap in right center field that rolled all the way to fence resulting in an inside-the-park home run, Gordodestky's first career round tripper.    The Eagles tacked on another run in the seventh when Gorodetsky opened the inning her with her second hit of the contest.  After advancing to third following a sacrifice bunt and an ASC wild pitch, Gorodetsky trotted home when sophomore Claire Bailey delivered a single up the middle that closed out the game's scoring.

In the nightcap, Brottman hurled all six innings in upping her record to 7-0, giving up just a pair of hits and fanning three.  She was the beneficiary of an eight-hit Emory attack, three of which were for extra-bases.  The Eagles struck with a pair of runs in the second when sophomore Megan Light, who led off with a double, eventually scored on a wild pitch.  Goodenough accounted for the other run when her two-out senior scored senior Jessica Thomas.   The Eagles blew the game wide open in the fifth when they crossed the plate four times.  The big blow in the frame came when freshman Moira Sullivan rocketed a three-run homer to left field.   Emory scored two more times the following inning, the first coming on a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by senior catcher Jessica Boni that scored Gorodetsky.  Scharff then singled and scampered around to score following a double by Bailey.

The Eagles return to action on Thursday (Apr. 19) when they travel to Gordon College for a pair of exhibition games.
