Emory Softball Ranked No. 1 -- Posts Doubleheader Sweep vs. Covenant College

The Emory softball team moved into the No. 1 spot in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top 25 for the first time this season on Wednesday afternoon and then went out posted a sweep of a home doubleheader against Covenant College.  The Eagles topped the Scots, 11-2 in five innings in the opener, before earning an 8-0, six-inning decision in the finale.  The two victories ran Emory's win streak to 12 games and upped its overall record to 33-3 while Covenant fell to 20-18.

The Eagles mounted an 11-hit attack in the first game with four players hitting safely twice.   Senior catcher Jessica Boni went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and two runs while sophomore first baseman Megan Light came through with a pair of hits, a pair of runs scored and one RBI.  Emory struck first in the bottom of the second with junior Meghan Schultz blasting a two-out, two-run homer, her third round tripper of the campaign, to stake the home squad to a 2-0 advantage.  The Eagles then blew the contest wide open the next frame when they made the most of six hits and three Covenant errors in extending its cushion to 8-0.  Light, Boni, freshmen Moira Sullivan and Micah Scharff and sophomore Claire Bailey all came through with RBI singles in the onslaught.  Emory closed it out in the fifth by tacking up three more runs, the first coming off a double to left field by Boni.   Senior pitcher Bridget Holloway drew the start in the circle and racked up her 17th victory in 18 outings, tossing all five innings and allowing six hits while fanning four.

Emory jumped out of the gate quickly in the second affair, racing out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning.  Light came through with the big blow, a three-run double,  while Sullivan knocked in the first of her three runs with a single, one of three safeties for her in the game, that allowed Light to cross the plate.   After scoring once in the third, Sullivan accounted for both of Emory runs in the fourth with her double scoring Ellyn Kocoloski and Jamie Dodich.  The Eagles then finished off the Scots in the sixth when a wild pitch allowed pinch-runner Maija Ehlinger to score.   Sophomore Lena Brottman hurled the first four innings and raised her season mark to 9-0, allowing three hits and striking out one.  Senior Jaclyn Jacobi pitched the final two frames, holding the Scots hitless while striking out a pair.

Wednesday's games closed out the regular season for Emory.  The Eagles will hear on May 7 as to where and who they will play in the NCAA Tournament.
